Thanks Anne, I'll give that a try.As a matter of interest I have found census entries on Ancestry which were missing on SP, and conversely found many on SP which are not on Ancestry.I also had good success on Freecen.Such is life.

Yes, I think that happens on occasion :( but it's worse when I can't find them on either one :x

I really miss not being able to see images on the Ancestry site as we get to on SP. From following along everyone helping read certificates here at Talking Scot, I find I am much better at transcribing than most of the Ancestry folks. (of course, this is easy to say when you know the correct name of people, parishes, etc), but still....what big goofs I keep finding!

I never would have found my great grandfather Henry, even though I knew he was in Kansas, because he was listed as Nancy. I only found him because I knew the names of the children and their ages in 1930! This image was available, and I beleive the transcriber needs reading glasses.

David,

just a word of warning about the 14 day free trial - I used that once and unlike the ccurrent 3 day one they took my credit card details - the onus is then on you to cancel the subscription. I couldn't find the necessary information when the time came and ended up paying for it for a few months until I just cancelled the credit card. So keep all the details they send you. If they haven't taken your card details or you're wiser than I was, just ignore this!

Thanks for the heads-up Tish.I have marked my calendar, and saved the phone number and email address.I dont think i will be extending my membership, as I expect to exhaust all my options (and my eyesight) by then.

This is going to be a big grumble.
When are they going to stop the freebies? I'm glad for the people who have been having access to their rellies on ancestry, but I have a subscription and haven't been able to get on to the site, it's so busy!!

Another consideration to get Ancestry (the basic US edition at least) is to get online and purchase a copy of Family Treemaker 2006 which includes a free trial of Ancestry. ...my only wish is that it would be the World Edition of Ancestry so I might get at the English Census records, but it's better than nothing for $2.50 a month.
Have a good look at the box your software came in. When I bought mine (the mid-priced "Deluxe" edition), the box promised a free 9 month subscription to Ancestry.com. The front cover of the box flips open like a book cover to give more information, which I looked at carefully before I bought, and inside it lists "United Kingdon Census Records" as part of what can be searched as well as saying "... gives you unlimited access to Ancestry.com...."

When I signed up for my free subscription, it only gave me .com with no access to the UK records, so I phoned them and complained based on what the box promised, and they upgraded my subscription to a full world one with no trouble.

Why so it does. I guess I'll need to call them about this and see if I'm that lucky :-))

Although technically one can search the UK census records without this, it's just that you can't see the images.

True, but even more than the promise of the census records, it was the mention of "unlimited access" that made a limited membership seem wrong. :?
