Guardian and Observer

Post by Currie » Thu Nov 01, 2007 11:53 am

In another thread viewtopic.php?t=10262 Scooter reported that there would be a free 24 hour pass to the archives of the Guardian and Observer newspapers during November.

Could someone please give me some information on these newspapers?

e.g.
Where are they based?
Is the Observer just the Sunday version of the Guardian?
Are they in any way regarded as local newspapers or are they National?
Are they aimed at the same readership as the London Times?
If not, would they be regarded as ‘down market’?
Historically, how might the content have compared to that of the London Times?
i.e. would one paper have concentrated on particular events more so than the other.

Thanks,
Alan

I am sure someone will give you a better reply than myself. All I can tell you is: They are both daily broadsheets. The Guardian was originally a Manchester paper however a while back they relocated to London and they are traditionally condsidered as being left of centre on the political spectrum. The observer is a London based daily although they are both national papers rather than local.

Hi Alan,

Some background info about The Guardian can be found at:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/information/0,,711853,00.html

On that page you will find a link to a similar page about The Observer.

All the best,

Thanks very much both Andrews,

That’s exactly what I was after.
Looks like the archives will be an interesting resource rather than just ‘more of the same.’

All the best,
Alan

I was north of the border recently Without realising one day what day it was. I asked for the Guardian in a local newsagent. He correctly gave me the Observer commenting at the same time that I should know what day it was because the evening before was the time that England lost in the Rugby World Cup final !
Naturally, I thanked him courteously for this breaking news.
The Sunday Observer, without the tittle tattle, is supposed to be on the same political spectrum as the Manchester Guardian, left of centre.
The Guardian, like the Times is a nationwide paper. The latter being a capitalist tract with an acceptable middle to upper class visage. The former however, is the journal of choice for those who give a damm and are not too concerned with its lexicographic inexactitudes. The crossword is easier too.
That should ruffle a few feathers

The Guardian have just created a searchable digital archive which will feature all the copies of the paper and, its sister title, the Observer from the first issues in 1821 and 1791.
This is available as an on-line subscription service. During launch they are offering free 24 hr passes for Guardian readers. www.guardian.co.uk/archive

Thanks Malcolm, and for your previous post.

Actually anyone can get the free 24 hours. I’ve just tried it out and it works great. The software is the same as a Sydney newspaper I accessed recently.

The pages are broken into segments and those segments are further segmented. You’ve got to be careful if you’re right clicking to save an image as you may not pick up all of it. A large article may be broken up into a half dozen bits.

I’ve been using a screen capture utility to get what I want and join them up later if necessary. I haven’t tried the print function.
