Last night I discovered that my grandfather was a journeyman printer who learned his skills at The Aberdeen Journal starting in 1895 when he was 15. When I told my sister this she said my brother had found a pair of small pins resembling tie tacs from The Photo Art Club, Abd. June, 1906. This is the date my grandfather left for the USA.
Question: Does anyone know of a directory which might list this club? We're wondering if it was an inhouse organization at The Aberdeen Journal.
When I Googled Photo Art Club, the responses were more like Art Photo Club and most of the descriptions started out, "Sensuous....!"

This wasn't quite what I was looking for.....at least, I hope it isn't what I was looking for!

Carol,
I do have a directory for Aberdeen but it is for the 1960s. I will dig it out and see if I can find anything for you.

Sadly I cannot find anything for "The Photo Art Club" in the directory. All I can find is the Aberdeen Journals Ltd.
It might be best to contact the Aberdeen Journals, they own both the Press & Journal and the Evening Express newspapers.
http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/index.jsp
I also did a google search for the Photo Art Club and didn't come up with anything.
This is the website for the Aberdeen Journals Ltd:
http://www.thisisnorthscotland.co.uk/
At present it doesnt seem to be working.
Sorry I cant be any more help.

Thanks Andy,
It occured to me--after I posted asking about a directory, of course--that I should have asked about The Aberdeen Journal in 1906.
Maybe someone will see this and have some information. If not, then I'll email the Journal. They must have some sort of in house historian. Then again with the merger and cutbacks, maybe not. Oh well, if I look under enough rocks, sooner or later I'll find out something!

Another point of contact might be the Aberdeen Central Library they hold copies of the old papers for Aberdeen and I presume they would hold trade directories as well. The staff there are very helpful and would be happy to help you out.

Andy,
That's a good idea. I'll add the library to my list and see what I can come up with.

Hello Carol,
Slightly earlier editions of the Aberdeen Journal are available online.
The British Library Newspapers Website, managed by Gale, was launched on 22 October 2007, with 1,000,000 pages of content available to the FE and HE community in the United Kingdom. It includes pages from the following:
The Aberdeen Journal 1800-23 Aug 1876 - Regional Daily
Aberdeen Weekly Journal 30 Aug 1876-1900
etc………………
http://www.bl.uk/collections/britishnew ... 0list.html
All you need to do is find a kind hearted U.K. Further or Higher Education person who will do a lookup. Currently available free to them but not available at all to anyone else at this point of time.
Possibly easier said than done,
Alan

Thanks Alan,
I'm still looking for a kind hearted someone to get me into the Detroit newspaper archives!
Different subject:
I've been meaning to ask: Did you have any Currie relatives in Banffshire around Grange or Deskford in late 1700's? My 3x great grandfather John Longmore married Isobel Currie around 1800 and her father George Currie married Isobel Wilson in 1779. Isobel Currie had a brother James and I think a sister Janet, but I don't know a lot more about them.

Carol, it doesn’t look like we’re related,
Currie isn’t my name and I don’t have any Currie relatives or any connection to the place. It’s just a name that stuck in my head from when I was a youngster and mad keen on aeroplanes. I’ve used the name for different things over the years.

Alan,
The perfect disguise! Nice airplane too. Bi-planes are still used for crop dusting over here. It's like be buzzed by a very large bug if one comes over you unexpectedly!
I was just reading the discussion board at The Aberdeen Press and Journal website. Someone doing research on a WWII boat sinking in the harbour received a bunch of replys so I think I'll post a query about the Photo Art Club later today. Headed out the door for a trip to the Big City in a bit.
