Hi Mary,

At a recent meeting of the ScotlandsPeople User Group, there was mention of Scotland Online having acquired FindMyPast, but no mention of any merger of the databases or search facilities. It had been publicised elsewhere that the acqiuisition had taken place, so it was asked about. By implication it seemed the Scotland Online were operating these as separate businesses. Watch that space.

All the best,

AndrewP

I treated myself to a Family History magazine yesterday - and in there was a report about Scotland Online buying Findmypast.com.

They have reported that Findmypast is taking over the online databases from familyhistoryonline and has recently: " agreed to provide free online access to their BMD indexes at The National Archives in Kew for a one-year trial and at the Family Records Centre until it closes in March 2008". Great if you live in London!

It also reported that: "Scotland Online is actively looking at the possibilities for bring the two sites together". Now that would be handy if you use findmypast. I wonder how many years it will take? :)

The Scotland's People contract is up for renewal at the end of next year, and it is by no means a done deal that Scotland Online will get the contract again. I would imagine that the acquisition of Find My Past is a way of creating an option for themselves, but the fact that the contract is up for renewal next year would, I think, make it an unwise move to merge the databases, at least at this early stage.
