Hi all,

Got a quick question relating to the Scotsman Newspaper archive.

Is there any ideas on when it may progress from 1950 to the present day?

I am looking for a particular article about my Grandfather in the 60s where he was involved in a very bad car accident with a company tanker. I dont have an exact date just a general time frame, nor do I have any more details on it as my mother doesn't seem to know any more.

Not sure about the Scotsman, but I believe the Herald has, or is, being digitised, but for access to libraries and educational institutions only (as with the Times etc). Might be worth enquiring at your local major library about it.

As a long shot, have you tried the Guardian or Observer newspaper archive? This covers 1791 to 1975. If it was a major incident, it may have been picked up nationally. The link is http://archive.guardian.co.uk/Default/S ... 2827715084

It has been a long time since I posted on here as I have put family history to one side for now but I do still look in from time to time and , boy, am I glad I did today.

For some time now I have been looking for a murder case that took place in Scotland without any luck but thanks to your link to the Guardian I FOUND it. It was only a short reference to it but at least it has given me the date and the perpetrator's full name. Thank you, thank you thank you. Talkingscot comes up trumphs again

Hi Annette - glad to have helped!

If the trial was in Scotland, you should look up the online catalogue for the National Archives of Scotland at http://www.nas.gov.uk/catalogues/default.asp and see if you can locate the trial papers, which will be held at West Register House in Edinburgh. Normally you will get the precognition papers (witness statements etc) and if lucky, a trial transcript. Certainly the local newspapers will have probably carried a report on the trial.

Earlier today I was trying to find online newspapers for 1966. I'm looking for information on a fire that had tragic consequences. Thanks for the Guardian link. I haven't found anything yet but I'll keep trying.

Hmmm I still have no luck finding anything at the guardian. It shouldnt be too hard to look for with a name and the nature of the accident.

Is it worth e-mailing the Scotsman to see if they have a computer database of newspapers past 1955?

The Mitchell Library has a series of printed index volumes for The Herald in the corner by the newspaper microfilms on the second floor, but I am not sure what year range they cover - at a long shot, might it be worth contacting them?

For added interest, the Glasgow Herald has been digitised up until 1900, however currently you can only see this in the British Library or educational institutions who have signed up for it. I had a look the BL in St. Pancras and it's great! I found numerous mentions of my surname in the announcements sections that aren't on any pre-1855 databases. Like the Times Online, the search feature is the same, and from what I've looked at, was pretty accurate.
