Death records 1700s
Is it possible to find death records on SP?
I have a John Belfrage born 13/1/1717 to John Belfrage and Janet Bell in Inverkeithing Parish, Fife.
I then have a John Beveridge born 04/01/1726 to John Beveridge and Janet Bell in Inverkeithing Fife also.
I am assuming that the first John died and then they had another John but would really like proof that this was the case. Is there any way to check?

Hi Ailsa,
My understanding is that this dates back to the OPRs being indexed initially by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints creating the IGI. Their main purpose was finding births / baptisms and banns / marriages, but the deaths / burials were never indexed by them. So the index being created now for the deaths / burials in the OPRs is the first time that has been done on a national scale (some individual parishes have been indexed previously by family history societies or individuals). No date has been made public yet for the death / burial OPR index and images to go online on ScotlandsPeople.
All the best,
AndrewP

Have you looked at the information held by the Fife Family History Society - They have MIs - I am unsure as to whether the Fife Deaths CD is based on MIs or Parish records - someone else may know

Hi Trish
The Fife Death records CD is based on just about every extant record they could lay hands on.
Some are from MIs (although they don't quote any inscriptions) others are from OPR documents. still others are from press reports, so the details given vary quite widely but it is a terrific resource.
I have just about exhausted it as a resource for my own ancestors but it has been useful for some of the enquiries on TS.

Dear Russell,
I would be grateful if you could have a look at the below death for me.

Hi Ailsa
I had a look under Belfrag/Belfradge/Belfrage; then
Beverige/Beverage/Bevarige/Bevaridge/Beveridge and only a few of these variant names came up in Inverkeithing.
There was a John Belfrage of Dalgety, Coaltoun of Fordel died 13/2/1741
And
John Belfrage occ merchant Culross died Mar 1744 but married to Catherine Aitken.
Most of the Belfrages seemed to live in Torreyburn parish.
Loads of Janets but none with the M.S. Bell.
Sorry
