Ayrshire records - Mushet

Post by jennyblain » Tue Mar 25, 2008 2:48 am

Hi all,
I'm trying to track my Mushets (Mushat, Mushot, Muschet and a few others too) in the 18th century in Ayrshire. Records seem a bit sparse and what's there is not very infomative. Starting point is James Wallace Mushet b. 1804 in Kilmarnock, first child of Jean Hamilton and John Mushet.

I am trying to piece together some possibilities which is about all I'm going to get, more probably. Names recurring in later generations are James, Henry and Archibald, and the 'Wallace' as a middle name seems to persist though not in my line. It's possible that John may have been a (b. 1784) James Mushet and Janet Adam, with a brother Archibald (who also had a son James with whom my James and his wife and children shared a household in the 1841 census.. it gets quite complicated). But I'm writing simply to ask if there's anybody else around with people from the Kilmarnock area, and particularly if there are any Mushets, Hamiltons or Adams (or Wallaces) among your people!

So - about to take the plunge and splash out on SP again, to see what can be found ...

Hi Jenny:

Have you tried the IGI - there are a few Mushet listings for Ayrshire with one named Agnes Howie Wallace Mushet b. 1867. Perhaps one of the attached pedigree charts may give you some leads.

Thanks Frances, but I'm looking for things 100 years before that - 18th century, working back from James Wallace Mushet. Also the IGI records doesn't hold all the records for this area - I've found some though SP that aren't listed in IGI. I do, though, try IGI regularly in conjunction with other things, but am at the stage where I need more info than an index can give.

(It can be useful, though, looking for 'pedigrees' as sometimes an entry by an LDS person can give a good start and can be later verified, though sometimes they are very unreliable. But nothing here.)

Unfortunately also, the OPR birth and marriage records that I've seen for Ayrshire tend to be very brief, giving only the names, no fathers and no witnesses or cautioners.

But I'm having some fun speculating about James Mushet and Janet Adam and their 11 (or more) children, born between 1772 and 1796... oh, poor Janet!

Regards,
Jenny

Hi Jenny:

Someone with more experience may have something to guide you. I've not searched that far back, but the records prior to mandatory registration, sadly are up to the presiding minister. Like any other profession, some were good record keepers, others not.

All the best,
Frances
