Ancestry and the neighbour search

Post by Anne H » Sun Mar 30, 2008 11:44 pm

Hi,
I haven't used Ancestry much for several months and just noticed today that you can no longer search the census records for neighbours.

Anybody know what happened?

Regards,
Anne H

Anne,

I ran into the same thing last night but it there for some people and not for others. I thought it was just the searches that I was doing! Don't have a clue what's going on. :?

Thanks, Carol :!:

I sent an enquiry to Ancestry asking what happened. My membership will be up in a couple of days, and if they aren't going to give me my almost $300 worth...I don't think I'll be renewing :-k

Anne H

I noticed it too, Anne. Like Carol, I thought it was something I was doing differently! Please let us know what you hear back.

Best wishes,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
If they respond, I'll let you know.

I also noticed it has a new look...I wonder if that might have something to do with it...maybe someone forgot to reset all the little buttons

Don't want to hijack the post but wondered what you folks thought about the usefulness of Ancestry. I've just been given a gift of some money & the choice is to put it towards the purchase of a 2nd hand laptop to take to NRH with my FT stuff on it OR a subscription to Ancestry. What d'you think?

Muriel,

Now there's a choice I'm glad I don't have to make! :D

No question that there is a ton of information available on Ancestry. My sister and I went halves on a second year because there are about a thousand more relatives we'd like to look for. Ancestry, if you've never used it, does have a problem with transcription errors. They do often make for a good laugh! I'm still chuckling over "Unfit for any deenaphon." (occupation)!

What concerns me right now is the "new look" several of us have noticed in the past few days which seems to be missing the ablility to see the "other people on this page" of the census records. If we're going to lose search abilities, then we probably won't sign up for a third year. This particular search ability countered the transcription error problem somewhat and I can think of at least two relatives I wouldn't have found without it.

Hi
Well I've just tried it, an 1891 England search, and Neighbors(sic) "View others on the same page" is still there.
I'm a Cousin - are you? http://www/LostCousins.com

Looking for Beck and Trotter in Hawick and
Roxburghshire

Hi Muriel,

I’m not one for buying 2nd hand anything, especially computers, but that’s only because I don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to computers! By the way, if you do opt for the laptop, don’t be like me…use it well! I bought a laptop a few years ago and only remember to turn it on every so often to update it.

My opinion would be that unless you have several ancestors outside Scotland, I think I’d be inclined to stick with the “freebies” that Ancestry comes out with every so often, or keep your subscription to a month at a time since you’re in Edinburgh and in a position to get into the official records for all of Scotland.

I do agree with Carol in that there is a ton of information accessible on Ancestry, and although I find their indexing irritating, and transcription errors can be funny (here’s one for my great grandfather “Pig Ismbintrecter” which translated means that he was a “Pig Iron Contractor”), Ancestry has helped me break down a couple of nasty brick walls and I’m glad I have it.

…that said, if they don’t give me back my neighbour search facility, I’ll have to think twice about renewing my subscription.

Regards,
Anne H

Hi trotterbeck,

Yes...they are there for England (possibly because the image is there also). I was referring to the Scottish census records...that's where it's missing :)
