Hi Gillian,

I can't help you with the Russells, but where was Janet Inverarity from? There is an Inverarity connection with a large Clerihew family in Tulleynessle, Aberdeenshire. My branch of the Clerihew family may or may not be connected to them, but the family seems to originate around Alford and there is an Inverarity family there too.

Gillian,

Looks like you have a real challenge ahead of you here. I was looking at Inverarity and Russel families on ancestry and there are many of each in both Fife and Aberdeenshire. Of course, John and Janet are favorite names on both sides! :D

My Inverarity connection was a William born in 1835. His parents were George and Jean. He did have a sister named Jean whose real name might have been Janet. He named one of his daughters Janet but she wasn't born until 1860. William and his wife had both died by 1879.
The family seemed to move between Aberdeen and Tullynessle, but this is probably a long shot to be the Inveraritys you are looking for.

Best of luck!

Gillian,

I had some extra credits for SP so I got the marriage OPR for John Russel and Janet Inverarity. I don't know if you tried this or not, but the page came up blank so I sent contact form to SP and received a transcription of the OPR this morning. It reads:

After due proclamation of banns, John Russel, tailor in Aberdeen was the First day of November one thousand eight hundred and thirty two, married at Aberdeen, to Janet, daughter of the deceased, David Inverarity, late Seaman in Aberdeen, by the Reverend John Murray, Minister of North Parish in Aberdeen in presence of these witnesses, John Forbes Flax dresser in Aberdeen and George Russel, tailor there.

The Aberdeen marriage registrations have a lot of information in them! Janet's father was David Inverarity so she wasn't a direct relation of mine but now maybe you can find out who he was married to and have Janet's mother's name too!

Carol,

Thankyou for taking the time to help me, i got some credits too yesterday and tried to get the marriage certificate, it came up blank too but they have not replied to me yet so your information is very useful, pity it wasn't a direct relation but it will be interesting to find out, i did actually find out they had other children one who died very young in his twenties, in 1865 but at that time it says his parents were dead so not long from their marriage in 1832.

Many thanks for all your help.
