Pre-printed registration forms for Aberdeen City

Post by speleobat2 » Mon Apr 07, 2008 4:17 pm

Does anyone know when the city of Aberdeen started using pre-printed registration forms? The 1840 marriage of my great great grandparents James Longmuir and Janet Milne is recorded in what appears to be a pre-printed ledger of some kind. The information is hand written into blank spaces in the form and there are four forms on this page.

I'm curious because when I purchased the 1832 OPR for the Russel/Inverarity marriage from another post, the image was unreadable, but appeared to be a few lines of handwriting in an unprinted ledger/register. SP sent me a transcription after I sent them a contact form, but the transcription reads like the pre-printed 1840 form with lots of information so now I'm thinking that the image was misnumbered perhaps.

It could be that for some reason at that time they had printed forms, but they didn't use them all the time. It might be worth contacting the Registrar in Aberdeen to see if they can shed any light - email searchroom AT aberdeencity [dot] gov [dot] uk

Hi Carol,

As these were pre-registration days, my guess would be that this form was made up for that church.

All the best,

Thanks to both of you!

Andrew, the  just went on! Of course, the registers belonged to the church and not the city before 1855!

My relatives were married in John Knox church and I believe that the other people were married in Aberdeen North? I'd have to go back and check. It makes sense that pre-printed registers would be more available to churches closer to the city.

Carol :)
