US IRS Tax Assessment Lists 1862-1918 on Ancestry

Post by speleobat2 » Sun Apr 13, 2008 8:28 pm

Ancestry has a new database available--US IRS Tax Assessment Lists 1862-1918. Not all the states are on the lists, but about 36 of them are.

Don't know how useful this will be, but it is fun. I found a Clerihew--not mine--who was taxed one dollar on his watch. Someone else paid $2. for their piano and $10. for their stallion. Their carriage was only taxed $2.

Hi Anne,

Of course, that's their hook!

I don't know just where you are located in Florida, but check with your local library. Some of them have a subscription which local residents can use.

Hi Carol,

Thanks for bringing that up. I didn't even think of enquiring at the library. They do have a tiny little room for research, so I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Regards,
Anne H
