Another hard-to-decipher document

Post by Linfleks » Sat Jun 28, 2008 5:01 am

Hello all~
I received lots of help and good ideas with the last document I posted in the gallery, so I'm hoping to find that again. I posted an OPR record for Thomas Whyte, 15 Sep 1657, which I think might be a real challenge! So far I've only been able to make out a few words. Any ideas would be welcome!
Thanks,
Linda :)

Hi Linda,

Here is my interpretation of the OPR birth record, followed by my translation of it.

15 Thomas Quhyte ____ sone to Thomas
Quhyte and ______ Quhyte Quitness Alexr
_____ John Colyson James ______

15 Thomas Whyte ____ son to Thomas
Whyte and ______ Whyte. Witness Alexr
_____, John Colyson, James ______

The IGI gives the mother's name as Alison or Isobell Whyt. If it is either of these, I would favour Isobell.

I will have a look at the other names and see if I can make any more of them. I guess the word before son will be lawful or natural, or illlegitimate or legitimate (abbreviated to ???).

The Colyson's daughter Elizabeth is the next baptism listed on that page.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Andrew,

Thanks for taking the time to help with this! You know, "Quhyte" never occured to me, even though I knew it to be a variation of "White". I'd never actually encountered it before.

Once you wrote "Alex", "John Colyson" and "sone", I could SEE them. :) I think I need to print up a copy of the way the letters were written in that time period and keep it taped above my computer!

The interpretation on the IGI records of "Alison" or "Isobell" had left me wondering how the two could be confused; until I saw them on the OPR. I agree with your inclination towards "Isobell".

I hadn't noticed the following entry for the daughter of John Colyson; thanks for pointing it out! I usually at least scan the other entries, but I was having such a tough time reading the one I was looking for, I hadn't yet looked at the others.

I am going to try to post another version of the record. I tried to remove the background 'noise', to make it more clear. Not sure if it improved it any...Any additional ideas you have would be vastly appreciated!

Regards,

Linda :)
