Hi,
What might be the significance of a surname being used as a middle name, i.e. in this case "Ann Dargie Scott" born in Parish of Monikie in 1836?
Could it indicate adoption? Could it indicate extra-marrital involvement?
Her mother appears to have been one Susan Gibson who appears to have been married to one John Scott at the time of Ann's birth.
Not quite sure who Susan Gibson's parents were Henry Gibson/ Jane Gibson or David Gibson/ Elizabeth Walker.
Thanks
James

Hello James
Nothing sinister
about having Dargie as a middle name.
It was quite a common occurence in Scotland to include a "family" name when a bairn was born and named.
The family name could come from a number of sources, the mothers maiden name, grandmothers maiden name etc. Or from the male line.
In my own case all of my three given names are from the maternal maiden names from both sides of the family.
It may also give you a bit of a lead into a another line of ancestry.
This could actually be a bit of a clue!

Dargie as middle name
Stewie,
Thanks for this. I was sort of guessing that it was a clue to a relative somewhere along the line. I am aware that sometimes in the more recent Statutory Registers of birth a child named 'Ann Dargie Scott' the Dargie might be given as a middle name derived from the fathers surname where the birth was illegitimate, the Scott coming from the mothers surname. I wondered whether this practice went on in the OPR as well as the Statutory Registers. However, Ann's mother Susan had the maiden surame Gibson. So that ruled out that possibility.
I'm struggling to find any Dargie relation to Ann Scott as grand parents. Possibly because I may be reaching the end of the traceable line of descent.
This is actually my wife's family, and the Dargie 'connection' and more still the Parish of Monikie (to where I have traced some of my own relatives), came as something of a suprise. I'm trying to see if we are 'related' by more than marriage - blood.
Thanks though

Hello James
My pleasure, we are all here to help.
I understand about reaching the end of the line on online searches, it has happened to most of us at one stage or another
Perhaps Susan Gibsons mother survived past 1855 and there is a death certificate for her? Or perhaps the name came through the paternal line.
Ah! the trials and tribulations of searching for our long losts.
As you stated it is possible that the wain was born out of wedlock and given the fathers name, but I wouldnt let this idea cloud your searching, keep trying on the basis that the wain is "legitimate" and Dargie is a family name

On the IGI there is a marriage between a John DARGIE and a Susan GIBSON at Monikie on 8 July 1815..
On Freecen 1841, living at Bankhead, Monikie, there is a
John DARGIE 60 Teacher Born Angus
Susan DARGIE 45 "
Alison DARGIE
William DARGIE
Henry GIBSON 7 Male Servant Born Angus
This looks kind of interesting.
All the best

Catriona,
Thanks - I'd stumbled across this entry and thought at first I'd struck gold, but no its not quite right date, location or name wise.
Ann Dargie Scott was Born 1836 and died 1894. She is listed as being the Daughter of John Scott & Susan Gibson who married in 1831. I have them resident at Lochend in Monikie Parish.
John Scott born 1807 died 1899. John Scott 's parents were John Scott's parents were James Scott & Margaret Robertson, according to his entry in Statutory Deaths in 1899.
Susan Gibson died before statutory registration, so its hard to know who she or her parents were. However, Monikie parish website has transcribed the wording of headstones in the cemetary. There is one erected by John Scott to his wife Susan Gibson who died in "childbed" in 1847, aged 41 years. This would make her born in 1805. Assuming the Monikie link holds true there are two Susan Gibsons born in 1805. Making her parents either: Henry Gibson/ Jean Gibson or David Gibson/Elizabeth Walker. My bets are on the latter two as Susan appears to have had 7 children between 1831 & 1846, including one named David and one named Elizabeth.
I think the Susan Gibson marrying John Dargie is unrelated, at least in this generation.
I still have much digging to do.
