The fate of the session records of Cults, Fife

Today was an "open doors" day in Fife, so off we went to visit a few places not normally open to the public.

We visited Cults Kirk, a church built in the late 1700s, on the site of an earlier church. I have folks who attended this church back in the early 1700s, and had often wondered why there seemed to be no sign of the Kirk Session records at NAS...
Well, I found out the reason today. It seems there was a fire in November 1926 in the top storey of the manse, and along with other valuable church records and items, the Kirk Session records were lost.

There is a wonderful small Session House outside the church - so small that it looked like it would be pretty cramped if more than about half a dozen session members attended a meeting!

Cute! I vote that the next TS moderators meeting be held ("virtually," of course!) in that session house

Sorry about the Kirk Session papers. I've lost count of how many of the court houses in the U.S. burned down in the 19th century with all my ancestors' vital records in them

Now there is no record of the queue of fallen women waiting to be called in to the Session House to apologise to the men of the Kirk Session for antenuptual fornication and the likes.
