US Citizenship and Immigration records available

Post by speleobat2 » Sun Nov 02, 2008 12:38 am

Hi everybody,

I found this in my latest Ancestry newsletter: If you had a relative whom you know immigrated to the US and you know his/her year of birth you can ask the USCIS to search their records for your relative's records.

The website is: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis

Click on Services and Benefits in the upper left end of the tool bar under the official logo, then on Genealogy. Read the Frequently Asked Questions!!! You don't even need to know an exact spelling of the name.

If the birth date of your relative is less than 100 years before the date of your request, then you must provide proof of death but there are many options of acceptable docuements.

This is a pay for services site. $20 for an index search to get the file number. Another $20-35 for the records depending on what type of record it is.

There is a ton of information here. Take a look!

Oh dear, Carol! I seem to have missed out by 8 months.

My great grandfather was naturalized on January 19, 1906...these records start on September 27, 1906, unless there is a possibility he might be in the A files prior to 1951, and if so, I'll check that out when funds are flowing.

Thanks for letting us know. :)

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Anne,

Yes, me too! The relatives that I would be interested in came over in the 1880's so most likely their records won't be in there either! And the money thing is always a problem. I wish at least the indexes were available online and free. I have a number of "unknowns" that I would like to search for, but not at $20 a pop!
