OPRs in Shotts

Post by Jean Jeanie » Thu Nov 13, 2008 7:35 pm

Hi All

I know this has been discussed before, but for the life of me I can't find it

I know that some parishes only have records of boys' births and some only have records of girls' births.

Is there a list anywhere?

In particular I am interested to know if Shotts from 1804 - 1819 only has records of girls.

It certainly looks that way from looking at the batch number.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,

It is not that they only recorded the girls' births in the OPRs, but that for a fair number of parishes the online version of the IGI only lists the girls. I have never seen a reason given by the LDS - possibly keeping the size of the database down? The boys and girls appear on the microfilms, on ScotlandsPeople, or on IGI microfiche (or I believe in the computer based IGI available in LDS Family History Centres). In each of these parishes, that anomaly exists for the OPR years only. The 1855 to 1874 IGI birth records extracted from the statutory records are complete with boys and girls.

All the best,

AndrewP

I'm going round in circles with this one. :?

This is what I have on 2 people

Their births do not show on the IGI but there are two births on Scotlandspeople.

1.John Sneddan born 19 Aug 1804 in Shotts, parents David Sneddan and Ann Simson. I have him in censuses in Muiravonside Stirling.

2. George Snedden born 31 Dec 1820 in Rutherglen, parents James Snedden and Rachl Burt.

This George has sisters, shown on the IGI as being born Shotts and also sisters born in Rutherglen. His parents marriage is shown in both Shotts and Old Monkland. I have them on censuses living in Old Monkland

I cannot find birth for a John with parents James and Rachel Burt.

John died in Muiravonside Stirling in 1863 parents shown as David and Rachel Burt, informant his son in law.

George dies in Coatbridge in 1894, parents shown as James and Blank Burt, informant his son.

The question is .........are these 2 brothers?

Is the John born to David and Ann Simson a red herring?

Help

Best wishes
Jeam

Edited afterwards. John's father was shown as David on his death cert. Apologies for the error!!! I had originally shown it as James

Thanks for that Anne.

Aminta isn't mine. I found her ages ago and thought it was a great name to research.

Trouble was she led me back to a Rachel Burt in Dunferline married to a James Sneddon with a list of kids that didn't tie in with my lot. So there was a Rachel Burt and James Sneddon in Dunfermline and in Lanarkshire.

I'm not sure about Elizabeth in Polmont Stirlingshire either :?

There are Sneddons in all three places.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Anne

Just proved that the Elizabeth born in Polmont Stirlingshire is mine :D :D :D

They must have nipped over to Stirlingshire for a few years between 1823 and 1830

Back to John, his birth year is before Rachel Burt's marriage to James Sneddon in 1806.

I wonder if he was an illegitimate child, born before her marriage? Then took the name Sneddon afterwards.

More hunting I do feel.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Mary,

Glad to hear that Elizabeth fits in with your family. :D

I should have mentioned that I also checked for a John Burt with mother Rachel on the off chance he was illegitimate but only found one born in England in 1772…much too soon and wrong country.

Also checked for John with father James Snedden (and variations) and mother Rachel, but nothing there either, then tried with parents David Snedden and Rachel, but zilch!

I also gave Hugh Wallis a shot but nothing there either…you have a tough one here!

Regards,
Anne

Pity that Aminta isn't yours. :( She's in a family branch that married my GrGrandmother's sister. I have quite a bit on them because sadly that marriage had no children. Thought we were gonna be sharing real rellies instead of just namesakes there for a minute

Best wishes
Jean
