George Pringle, Denny - Where to find this article?

Post by Lorna Allison » Tue Nov 18, 2008 11:50 pm

Hello Folks

Researching re George Pringle b. 1815, Watchrepairer & Clockmaker in Denny, transported to Australia 1853 - I found that he is indexed in Clocks Magazine Volume 22 (1999/2000), Issue 6, Page 37.

Unfortunately they are out of stock so cannot order a back copy. I have been stumbling around googling sites but can't find where a copy might be stored, where I could ask for a photocopy.

Interestingly I found a picture of a gorgeous long case clock made by George Pringle of Edinburgh who was working in Edinburgh btwn. 1793 and 1822. My George was born (I believe because of distinctive family names) to a George Pringle Watchmaker, Edinburgh.

Any help in how to track down this article would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Lorna

Hi Lorna
Is it this magazine?
http://www.clocksmagazine.com/back-issues.htm
Back copies here (though not numbered...?)
http://www.clocksmagazine.com/back-issu ... ingdom.htm

http://www.clocksmagazine.com/indexes/volume-22.htm
Pringle, George, of Denny 6/37

I'm sure you've already tried this...but, have you tried contacting them to see if they could send a copy of the article?

Further thought, and a bit of a long shot....might your local jeweller/watch repairer be able to help you? They may take the magazine or know someone who does.

Best wishes
Lesley

That is the one Lesley. I went into back numbers but they don't have that particular month. I know I am dumb  but I could not see on the site how to contact them.

Amazingly, I have just googled George Pringle Denny and come up with a picture of (apparently) the same fantastic clock, attributed on "Antique Clocks & Barometers" site to George Pringle of Edinburgh, but this one is attributed to George Pringle of Denny.

I'm thinking poor old George must have been one clever guy (or not).

Missed your last bit Lesley. Oh good thinking. I have the phone number of a great chap in Carlisle who collects and delivers here. He is bound to know the magazine.

Thanks for that

Hello Lorna,

There’s some Scottish Pringle clockmaker bits and pieces in

“Old Scottish clockmakers from 1453 to 1850” (1921)
http://www.archive.org/details/oldscott ... 00smitrich

Pages 302-304 in the book but 360 in the DJVU copy:

Right Lesley - THAT IS IT - I am headed straight for the opticians

Got onto Clocks Magazine in Edinburgh, most helpful chap (a George Pringle of Denny clock sold for £2,800 in 1999 was all the info they had). He suggests I write a letter for the letters page asking if any reader has info on George Pringle of Denny. Progress :D

Alan, you are amazing at finding just the book needed. I had looked up books on ABE and phoned local library to get a copy of John Smith's book. Thanks to your link I now know what is in it, but am still going to get the book and enjoy a leaf through.

Thanks all round

Lorna

Glad to hear some progress has been made. I bet that out of those who take the Clocks magazine there is bound to be someone who either knows something about George, and even better, maybe also has a back copy of the article!! :D

Best wishes
