Aberdeen Journal Archives

Post by SarahND » Sun Nov 30, 2008 7:36 pm

Hi all,
Does anyone know where, if anywhere, one can get access to 20th century archives of the Aberdeen Journal without traveling to Scotland? The Gale free trial has the 19th century, but the issue I need would be in 1921. I have a feeling I should know this, but it has fled from my mind

Thanks,
Sarah

Hi Sarah

I assume you mean the Aberdeen Press and Journal?

I phoned the P&J and they have no online archives. However Aberdeen City Library Local Studies Dept will do searches for folk who can't visit. They dont seem to have a charging system, so if the request is reasonable they will follow it up for you.

You can e-mail them on:
LocalStudiesLibrary@aberdeencity.gov.uk

Hope this is useful. I live in Aberdeenshire and could look for you if the library can't help.

Best wishes

There was a separate Aberdeen Journal to the P&J - I assume it merged into the P&J later. They have separate entried in the Moray Libindx online and microfiche in the Centre. But I am sure the Aberdeen Library will be able to find what you need.

Hi
Yes you are quite right. The Aberdeen P&J wasn't founded until November 1922.

Hi all,
A follow up: Just received in the post today not only the obituary I requested, but also a series of photocopies of the Aberdeen street directory for the person in question. Copies are free up to £1 for people within the U.K. (black and white A4 copies are 10p each) and up to £5 for those outside the U.K. So, being outside the country, I didn't even have to pay a penny :D And very courteous, quick service too.

In short, if you have ancestors in Aberdeen, don't hesitate to contact the Central Library! Thanks again, Carolyn, for pointing me in the right direction!

Regards,
Sarah

So that means the apocryphal story of the headline at the time of the Titanic disaster "ABERDEEN MAN DROWNS AT SEA" next line underneath "Titanic sinks after iceberg collision" did NOT appear in the P & J (if it appeared anywhere,of course)
I'd like to be apathetic but I really can't be bothered.

Looking for blacksheep & not finding any with
Groats & Stevensons in Orkney, Hood's in Dundee/Angus, Mclaren's in Clackmannan and Jolly's in Kincardineshire. There may be more!
