Hi all,
I just received (as did many of you, I'd imagine) an email from NAS saying that as of January, photos will be required as part of the reader's ticket identification:
From 5 January 2009 we will also require readers to bring with them two colour passport-style photographs. One will be added to your reader’s ticket, as a means of identifying you when you enter the building, and to ensure that tickets are not transferred between readers. The other will be retained on file by NAS along with a note of the contact details you supply when you obtain a reader’s ticket.
We would advise readers to obtain such photographs in advance of a visit to prevent delays in issuing their new reader’s ticket. For those visiting General Register House, it might he useful to know that a photo booth is available in the St James Centre, Waverley Station and the Bus Station.
I don't blame them, given the thefts, etc. that have occurred in archives all over the world. Just thought it deserved mention here, in case anyone is planning a visit.
All the best,
Sarah

The website hasn't been updated about that change yet in its 'planning a visit' section'. However, I presume that it would be safer to take the photos with you to be added to your reader's ticket just in case.

A requirement of obtaining a readers ticket at the NAS - and the NLS for that matter - is the production of a photo driving licence. Surely an instruction to always carry that as well as the readers ticket would be enough? Mind you its no surprise they're following the trend into the Police State as dictated by the half wits in London.
What next, irus recognition scanners at the door?

Then from the east there came a wee hard man, oh hoa, aw' the wi fae Brigton.
