Missing after 60 years in same location

Post by mlmaler » Thu Mar 05, 2009 9:52 pm

Hi, I am hoping someone will have some advice. I searching for a family who were in Blackford Parish Perthshire as farmers since the early 1800s.

They were on the 1841, 51, and for the 61 Census the parents ages were around 45 and the youngest child 3 at that time. In the 1871 Census I can't find any records of them. Two daughters got married in 1863 but that still left 4 children under 10.

Part of the problem is we are dealing with the name Miller and of course the given names are very common.

The mother was living with the married daughter in Muthill when she died in the early 1900s.

Any ideas? This is my first time, so if I have done this wrong please let me know.

Thanks

If you want to toss out a name I'll be happy to have a look at the census indexes for a possible mis-transcription. Have you searched by address for the later missing census years? or by occupation? What age was the wife...could her husband have died and she remarried and is indexed under another surname? Are there any births or deaths of more children that can pinpoint the family?

Best wishes
Jean

A couple of ideas:
Two daughters got married in 1863
The married daughters - do you have their marriage certificates?
if so,
1.what address do they give and
2. was the father noted as deceased at that time?

That could help you locate them.

But as Jean mentioned post the names, ages, farm name etc and TS members will do what they can.

Hi All
Muthil & Blackford are next door parishes, I have ancestor's who were at times in Blackford and sometimes in Muthil. There are lots of Miller's (Millar's) in and around Muthil also in Comrie which is only a few mile next door if you use the old footpaths from years gone by the distance is a lot shorter than the tarmacadam roads now a day's

Hi mlmaler and welcome to Talking Scot! [talkingscot]

No further info, I just wanted to make sure you were welcomed! As Jean and Wilma suggested, if you post the names and ages of the family members in the censuses you did find, someone on the forum will be happy to have a look and see if your family can be found in the other years.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Mary,
This looks like the family in Upsall, Yorkshire in 1871:

Upsall Castle Farm
James Miller, head, 48, Ag Lab, born Scotland
Janet Miller, Wife, 46, Ag Lab's Wife
Thomas Miller, Son, 18, Farm Servant
James Miller, Son, 16, Farm Servant
Alexander Miller, Son, 14, Scholar
Mary Miller, daur, 12, Scholar

They are next door to Duncan McArthur and wife Janet, so despite the age oddities, I would bet these are your family. Have you seen a death for wee Christina?

All the best,
Sarah

P.S. From FreeBMD I see this death from Thirsk District, Yorkshire (which may well include Upsall, being only a few miles off)

Name: Christina Miller
Year of Registration: 1864
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Thirsk
County: Yorkshire - North Riding, North Yorkshire
Volume: 9d

Hi Bruce,
I'm impressed you're even awake enough to post anything at all! And you never know, family members could have gone back to Scotland to marry, since I'm sure they kept up contact.

[cheers]
Sarah
