Register of Marriage-help with word

Post by Gingerbadcat » Wed Apr 01, 2009 11:27 am

I would post this in the deciphering part, however _I think I can read it,
more importantly I cant save the viewed image as any sort of file that I can then retrieve in my documents (not a very technical person I'm afraid!)

Entry from OPR Marriages 685/002 0180 0153 St Cuthberts.
" James Frazer Shepperd Braid and Janet Harrar (Harrower) daug.of Peter Harrarar (Patrick Harrower)Pencaitland residing there gave up their names for proclamation of Banns Matrimonial"

I have worked out B from Banns, the rest seems clear. What is Braid?
Secondly, am I right in thinking this was just the banns? I cant find a marriage at a later date.

Thank you !
:) Annie

Braid is probably a place - where he worked/lived.

http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/feature ... y8593.html
Says it is a burn or range of hills in the North of 'Edinburghshire' [Lothians]
and mentions the parish of St Cuthberts.

There is a Braid Road and Braidburn street in the Morningside area of Modern Edinburgh.

A look at an old map http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/oneinch_1st_list.html
Edinburgh 1857 clearly shows the Braid burn running south of Morningside and there's a Braid Cottage, Braid House and Upper Braid.

I also noticed a place named Egypt!!!!! It doesn't seem to still exist but there is a Nile Grove, Jordan and Canaan Lanes - sorry just going off at a tangent!

Hi Annie,

Braid Farm, Upper Braid, and most of Braid Road were in St Cuthberts Parish. The southernmost portion of Braid Road was just into the furthest out point of Colinton Parish. Colinton Parish was much larger than what woyld be considered as Colinton nowadays.

The oldest houses in Braid Road date from the 1880s. Braid Farm will be older than that (the farm house still exists, although no longer as part of a farm). The Braidburn streets probably date from around the 1890s. I was brought up close to there.

All the best,

AndrewP

The name Egypt was revived recently with Egypt Mews when new houses were built on the site of Egypt Farm. So the set is complete again. Another street in the area with a biblical name is Eden Lane.

All the best,

To save your images from SP, go into "My Details" and change your "Image Viewer" to "Direct Download" then click on "Update Details". You'll be able to save the image as a tiff on your computer.
