Hi TalkingScots...
I've got an OPR Marriage Record with 1 word I don't get. I've posted the image here
http://lisaandroger.com/MiscImages/Moff ... mation.gif
and am stuck on what is the word at the end of the 5th line?
I've got
"Peter in the Parish of Melrose and Nelly Mack in this Parish gave up their Names to be proclaimed in order for Marriage the eight day of Decr Ja??i? & seventy. Cautioners for him Peter Atchison in Stow & for her William Brompton"
What is the word after "Decr" - it has two dots above it, so does it end in ij?
From the top of the page (and of course the Scotlands People index) I know that it's 1770 that is being shown here - 8 December 1770, but am puzzled over how the 17 part of the year is apparently being expressed.
Thanks
Roger
PS I haven't forgotten about those who responded on my Queen Victoria Lady in Waiting question and General Gordon - that's a whole other line of research that got pushed aside for a few days.

Hi Rodger
it is what is known as a Jaj date:
It says Jajvii (the final "i" has a descender): jaj is 1000, vii is 7, so = 1700 and then the rest of the date is expressesd in words 70 years = 1770 see:
