Which Parish?

Post by steiner » Wed Jul 29, 2009 10:41 am

I'm looking for a Henry Murray supposedly born in Chapel Close, Main Street, Gorbals around 1800 give or take 10 years.
Can anyone tell which parish this location is in please.
Thanks for any help

regards

Andy

No expert, but I'd say Barony. No doubt a local will correct me though

Andy and Ann,

I'd go for Govan for a birth in that area in 1800.

If I've got the correct Henry in 1841 he was living at Bedford Street. My family lived just along the road and their birth parish was given as Govan.

regards,
Annette

Thanks guys.

A friend also suggested it might be Gorbals although a quick search on SP revealed nothing.

Just dug out a very rudimentary Thomas Richardson map of Glasgow parishes from 1795 I downloaded from somewhere or other a while back which appears to confirm Annette's suggestion. The parishes running left to right along the south side of the Clyde are:

Renfrew (covering from what's now Renfrew Golf club to the area just before the Southern General hospital.

Govan (covering a vast swathe of that side of of the river, running mostly east to west from the Southern General to somehwere near Richmond Park)

After that, the parishes along that side are Rutherglen, Cambuslang and Blantyre.

Contrary to what I said earlier, Barony only appears to cover areas on the north east side of the river.

Hope that helps,
Ann

And of course even though I have an exact address for a birth there is no Henry Murray turning up in SP for any parish in Lanarkshire which includes Glasgow.
Maybe he wasnt baptised!

..maybe he is hiding under a mistranscription - have you checked the original? Or maybe the OPR was not kept very well, maybe it has been damaged or there are missing sections, maybe he did not belong to the Established Church....there are lots of reasons why an OPR birth might not be found.

Best wishes
