Hello all,
This is a real straw clutcher
Trying to trace details of my great grandfather, HECTOR MENZIES,
who was a farm bailiff at MUCKHATCH FARM.
I have no idea where this farm was situated, but believe it to have been somewhere in Scotland. His son, John was born in 1869, so I believe the farm was in operation at this period throught to approx 1901. If anyone out there has any knowledge or suggestions I would greatly appreciate,
Thanks in antic
Brian Menzies

Hi Brian,

The only Muckhatch Farm that seems to be prevalent on Google is located in Thorpe in Surrey.

Any chance your chap, even with a Scottish name, might have relocated to take up the post of bailiff there?

This is the nearest I can find in 1891 district Fearn, Ross and Cromarty-

Hector Menzies 52 b Rosskeen
Ann A Menzies 53
John Menzies 22 b Alness, Ross & Cromarty
Isabella Menzies 24
Hector Menzies 18
Kenneth Menzies 12

There is no mention of the farm name but Hector is a Farm Grieve and manager on other census records.

I don't have time to look at a map just now but maybe if you look around that area it will show up.

Or perhaps a look at his birth entry on SP-

JOHN MENZIES

17 JUL 1868 Alness, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland

Parents:
Father: HECTOR MENZIES Family
Mother: ANNE AIRD

Mary,
You are a star
Your info ties up with the fact that my grandfather John Menzies was married in Egham and said to be residing in Kingston-on-Thames
at that time
Thank you so very much for taking the time and trouble

Regards
Brian Menzies

Welcome to TalkingScot!

While I was away looking, you've already had two responses - that's great.

Brian,

Welcome to TS.

I cannot help you directly but a few questions come to mind.

What is a a farm bailiff? What did he do? Is bailiff a Scottish and/or English identifier?

Hopefully someone will come along with the answers, which may be useful pointers.

Hi Brian,

Am new to this site but saw your post for Hector Menzies. We have the same family in our genealogy! Hector's brother Alexander, was father to Robert Menzies, 2nd husband of my great-grandmother Mary Taylor McDonald. Robert and Mary had two children, Mary and George who were half-siblings to my grandmother Janet Watson Martin. I only recently found out that the half sister Mary, died in 2005 aged 97! I lived in Scotland for 5 years and was even in Tain where Mary lived at the time but unfortunately never knew anything about her then. If only I had I could have met her! I don't have a lot of information on the Menzies family but if there is anything I can help you with...perhaps names....please let me know!

Hello mclachlan.
You must think me very rude in not replying to your msg of Feb. but | have only just picked up on it. I have not been doing any "digging" for a while. From a lot of info supplied by a very kind lady named Annette, I am fairly certain that my Grandfather John Menzies, son of Hector Menzies and Anne Aird was born in Alness, Ross and Cromarty circa 1871.
There are connections to Jock Aird who was the postmaster on the Black Isle and the Moirs of Invergordon. At the end of the war in europe I travelled with my father to Invergordon where we stayed with Donald and Bella Moir. Their son, Alec was the local carrier and on occasions would travel with him on his rounds. I was about 10 years old at the time. Their are photographs of Alec and his father on the Invergordon picture library. Alec had two sons, Donald and Davie. Donald ws in the army stationed near Leicester from where we travelled up to Invergordon.
Should their be any queries you may have, feel free to ask. Don't know if I will have the answers
Best regards
Brian

Hi Brian,
No, I don't think you are rude at all! I only just saw your message! Thanks for the info, will follow it up. I haven't done any research for a little while either....sometimes you just need to have a break!
Kind regards,
Andrea
