Burial help

Post by David Lang » Wed Sep 16, 2009 11:35 pm

Im trying to find out where my grandmother was buried, she died in 1954 in Glasgow.

The rest of the family were all cremeated in my living memory but i think 1954 maybe to early for a cremeation?

What paper would be best to look up for a death notice? And would the mitchell be the best bet?

Got a couple of days spare this week and would like to get this sorted out if possible?

Hi David,

Glasgow (Maryhill) Crematorium opened in the 1890's!

I think the Glasgow Herald would probably be you're best bet - the Evening Times possibly too.

Good Luck!!

Hello

Which part of Glasgow did she live and/ or die in?

You could have a look on http://www.memento-mori.co.uk/

They have a few Glasgow cemeteries listed and sometimes the dates can be fairly recent.

Knowing the area the family lived in or came from could help narrow the search down a little. For example South Side, Govan, Pollock, Ibrox, Hillington areas used Craigton crematorium & Cemetery or Cardonald Cemetery.

She live din knightswood died in the Western Infirmary, if she is buried i think it will be Lambhill.

Nver knew crematoriums were around so long ago( well you learn something new everyday)

The problem we have is my grandfather got rid of alot of the information when she died and would really talk about it and my father was a young boy and doesnt remember much

Well, Lambhill is listed on http://www.memento-mori.co.uk/37.pdf and there are a few females buried there in 1954 - though they are elderly women, so not likely if your father was young then.

Checking the newspapers will be the best step in this case.

In the North of the city - try also the Western Necropolis.
