Incoming Passengers from Ireland

Post by Andrew C. » Mon Nov 23, 2009 9:13 pm

I was playing about with either google or ancestry.co.uk and put in my great grandmothers name (Elizabeth Cochrane dob 1881)and up came a reference for incoming passengers to the UK on Ancestry. I am not a member of Ancestry at the moment (although I will probably take out a monthly subscription in the New Year when I have more time) could anyone tell me will this list just give the ship and date of travel, or will it give any additional information?

Hi Andrew,
The UK Incoming passenger lists don't always give a great deal of information, especially the earlier ones. Some only give name and age and possibly occupation. But others the person's name, age, port of embarkation, occupation, whether they are English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish or British Colonial, port of landing. Some later ones ask the question of where they plan to make their future home. You can also see if they had other family members with them.
But, these are not incoming ships from Ireland, as your title suggests. At least I have not seen any such. They are from other parts of the world outside the British Isles and Europe. Mostly from the U.S., Africa, India, Australia, South America, etc.

Are you wondering about the one in 1910? That Eliza Cochrane was coming from New York, but was Scottish by origin.

All the best,
Sarah

Here's part of the blurb from the database:
About UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960
This database is an index to the Board of Trade’s passenger lists of ships arriving in the United Kingdom from foreign ports outside of Europe and the Mediterranean. Exceptions to this are vessels that originated outside of these areas but then picked up passengers in European or Mediterranean ports en route. The UK port of arrival was not necessarily the final destination of the ship.

I thought I had seen the ships point of origin as Ireland, which suprised me as I didn't think that information would have been taken never mind kept. I probably just got over excited at the thought of finding some information and read something that wasn't there. Thanks anyway.

Hi Andrew,

As Ireland (the whole island) was part of the UK from 1801 to 1922 (or 1927), I don't know that many passenger lists would have been taken or kept for an internal sea crossing. It was not really an immigration as it was not crossing any international boundaries, in the same manner as a ferry crossing from Scotland / England / Wales to Northern Ireland nowadays.

All the best,

AndrewP
