Re: Pre 1855 deaths
Hello Kevin,
Some, relatively few, pre 1855 deaths appear in newspapers of the time either because there was something about it worth reporting, accident, murder etc., or because the family paid for a death notice.
Try a Google for the name and a separate search of Full View material in Google Books as newspaper material may have been repeated somewhere there.
Make sure you read the warnings including those on SP’s OPR Deaths Search Page and understand how well your geographical area of interest is covered etc.
All the best,
Alan

Re: Pre 1855 deaths
Various groups also have some Pre 1855 deaths online - the one I know of is the Fife FH group who have a CD of such deaths but some of the records are also online. There are probably others - google the family history group for your county of interest
http://www.fifefhs.org/ - select the records option on the left
