Find a Grave

Post by bleckie » Sat Jun 26, 2010 9:01 pm

Hi All

Copy of email received from a friendly councilor.

Find A Grave in Scotland
Let me introduce you to a new website facility http://www.findagraveinscotland.com
We are at present compiling a database of every interment accompanied by a photograph of the grave marker in Scottish cemeteries. As you will understand, to compile this information will take a while, as there are over 3000 cemeteries in Scotland. It is planned to complete the website over a 2 year period with new cemeteries being added weekly.

When complete the website will have;

An overarching site called Find A Grave In Scotland with a webpage for every Council area.
Cemetery locations and address
Give relevant details of:
surname, first name
date of death
age of death
cemetery and lair number
Provide a printable photograph of the grave marker/headstone

Haven't had a look yet so don't know how much it costs

Yours Aye

Thanks bleckie.

Just checked it out and seems to be £3 for a photo.

"This is just a low resolution thumbnail image of the headstone photograph we have on file.

You will be able to view or download the high resolution photograph once you have paid using the PayPal button below.

Cost £3.00 "

That's an unfortunate choice of name, since findagrave.com, which has been around for a long time, is free.

Sarah

Hello All,

It is being promoted by ‘friendly councillors’? There’s no such thing! Yet the site claims “FindAGraveInScotland.com is a privately owned website with no affiliation to any Local Councils.”

It sounds like just another .com to me, leaping onto the genealogy bandwagon with the intention of extracting even more money from the Scottish genealogist. But at least the good thing is that you can harvest some very useful information from the site without paying anything.

Hi Alan

Like you I thought "another way to raise a buck" then wondered if they would stoop so low as to misappropriate the images and info that a wide range of free sites have already posted.
Or am I just being a pessimistic cynic ????

Hi All
Had a look at this site at the weekend.
Some of the information they have listed is wrong.
I had a look at Crieff and there are two listings for the same person and what they have done
is combined husband and wife's name i.e. they have husbands name as christiam and middle name and wife's name as surname.

Perhaps my initial email was wrong "it is not being promoted by friendly councilors it is that the councilor who got the email is a personal
friend of mine" from what I can gather most councils in scotland have received the same information it is maybe that the councils have been approached for information.

I’m sorry Bruce, and apologies to your friend.

(But not to ‘friendly councillors’)

All the best,
Alan

Good afternoon
I am Tom McPherson of Find a Grave ltd

I started this company to give a service to every one trying to trace there ancestors in Scotland
A present we do not have any affiliation to any council

The name was chosen as we own find a grave for all Scottish councils i.e. (find a grave in Perth, find a grave in Renfrewshire) etc
we felt that most people know they have a Scottish ancestor but may not know which council location
This is why we trade under find a grave in Scotland
All photo have been taken by our staff

Yes we have been in contact with all councils and Scottish government

As BruceL states we did have a typing mistake and sorted it right away and have thanked him for bringing it to our attention

I think it looks really promising . However I suspect something's wrong with the dates as so many people seem to have died on 1st January 1970 and 13 December 1901 , and no-one died before the 20th century . Or is it my browser?

Thanks for posting this.
