England & Wales, Index of Wills, 1861 to 1941.

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1861-1941 is now available at Ancestry.

I read about it here http://scottishancestry.blogspot.com/20 ... ndars.html

“This collection contains summaries of the vast majority of probate cases in England and Wales between 1861 and 1941. It effectively forms an index to wills and probate records for this period.”

Here’s some information about getting copies of the wills.
http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm

The next big step will be for the Probate Registry to modernise their payment system. It looks as if people in my neck of the woods have to get an international money order for £5 Sterling, and mail it to an address in the UK. According to my bank they charge A$35 in fees for the money order, that’s £20, a total of £25 for one will. The cost for two wills will be a total of £30, and so on.

I’ve never actually thought about getting one before as I never really knew whether the thing I would be sending the money for actually did exist. Hopefully their current antiquated payment system will collapse under the weight of new enquiries generated by the Ancestry release and they’ll have to do something about it. Mine won’t be among them.

Hi

Of anyone has access to this could they check for a will made by John George White born 1805 Ceylon and died after 1871- don't know exact date.
He was a shipbroker and latterly coal agent and/or merchant. Resided in Liverpool and Cheshire from about 1830 - 1871.

many thanks

Had a look, but couldn't see it, sorry. Maybe someone else will have better luck.

What a great resource! Certainly should be a big help for some.
It can be searched at:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1904
...but obviously to see the full details for the results you'll need an Ancestry sub, or access to Ancestry through your local library, family history society or similar.

Best wishes
Lesley

Do you have any other details, such as family members? or anything that may help?

Have had a fairly good look, but with over 4,000 odd items to look at in a 10 year period, makes it a little hard. If you have a death date that would probably make it a bit easier. I have downloaded the census for the years 1851 through to 1881 and if i have the correct person some details are not all there. There are several John Whites that have an Amelia as a wife, so even looking for a marriage appears to be rather hard. If you dont have the Census I can email them to you privately if you private message me. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

I found them on each census from 1841 -71 in Cheshire - but not on 1881for anywhere.

I think they may have both died between 1871 - 1881.

They married in Liverpool in 1831.

thank you .
