National Library Scotland - online sources

Post by Lindsay » Sat Oct 02, 2010 11:32 am

Some good news for anyone who lives in Scotland - you can now register for free access to a number of fascinating sources at the NLS site. These include the 19th century newspaper collection, the Scotsman archive, Parliamentary papers and many others which I'm now exploring:

Thanks Lindsay,

There’s some great stuff there. Parliamentary Papers can be much more useful than they sound. There are lots of little unexpected gems in the PP’s.

The availability of online resources at NLS, accessible from home, was reported a couple of years ago on TS and mentioned a couple of times since, but the number of resources and registration procedures has greatly improved over time. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12103&hilit=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nls.uk

I’ve just been reading on Chris Paton’s blog that within three weeks of registering you have to input a validation code which NLS mails to your Scottish address, but you can get access as soon as you register.

I wonder what would happen if someone outside of Scotland registered and gave a Scottish address that they just drew out of a hat. They wouldn’t be able to respond to the letter sent to that address and input the validation code. Would they be able to get free access to the licensed resources for the three weeks prior to the deadline?

Websites can usually tell where a visitor is physically located and maybe they would have some way of blocking access to the licensed resources by individuals outside the UK? I doubt if they could fine-tune that enough to tell if they're in the Scottish part of the UK.

I can get access to similar material via NL of Australia but in that case I think I had to wait until my card arrived in the mail.

All the best,
Alan
