Internet access at National Archives of Scotland?

Post by David Douglas » Sat Oct 02, 2010 3:09 pm

I'm off to Scotland next week and am planinng a trip to the National Archives of Scotland ( General Register House).

Are there computers available there with internet access, or if I bring a laptop is there wireless access?
All my genealogy data is stored digitally (and on a web site). I'd prefer not to take my laptop if there are computers available.

Hi David,

Unless things have changed in the last year since I was last in NAS, the only public-use computers in there are for you looking up their digitised records. I don't think that they are set up for public internet access. There wasn't wireless internet access avaible then either. Unless of course things have changed...

Have a read of the NAS website - http://www.nas.gov.uk

Ensure that you have a valid reader's ticket, or proof of identity and passport photographs to apply for a reader's ticket - details on the website.

Ensure that the material you are seeking is in General Register House. Some material is in West Register House (in Charlotte Square). Some other material is in a remote storage facility and needs to be ordered in advance for it to be brought to General Register House.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks, I suppose I'd better take the laptop after all, and install all my data on the hard disk. That way I can research other branches if i don't find what I'm planning to look for.

I didn't find any information about internet access on the site, but I had come across the bit about getting a readers ticket, and have got the passport photos.
all the best
David

I've just heard from the NAS - there's no wireless access, and from the PCs in the search room there's only access to a small number of selected web sites.
