Hello all,
Does anyone know if archived copies of the Glasgow Courier are available anywhere online? Or even on microfilm somewhere? In a google I see that many people have quoted articles from this newspaper, so it must be available, but I can't find where to find it. I'm interested in issues from 1819.
Note: If you google, you will find many references to a newspaper if that name in Montana-- not the one I am looking for!
All the best,
Sarah

Re: The Glasgow Courier
Hi Isabel,
Thanks for your reply. I know about the Glasgow Herald, but was under the impression that the Glasgow Courier was a different newspaper. Maybe I'm wrong? But I hope not, since the Glasgow Herald did not have the information I was hoping for.
All the best,
Sarah

Re: The Glasgow Courier
Hi Lesley,
I came across it in a search for something or other... and wondered if it was to be found. It seems to have had a definite political slant. For example, there are two mentions of such a paper in the Wikipedia article on William Motherwell:
He became editor of the Paisley Advertiser in 1828, and of the Glasgow Courier in 1830.
Motherwell left Paisley for Glasgow in 1830 to become the Tory editor of the Orange-Tory paper the Glasgow Courier.
In an internet search one finds little snippets here and there from this publication:
"In our opinion, the Irish have as much right to come to this country to better their lives as the Scots and English have to go to Ireland or any other part of Britain for the same reason. Let us hear no more complaints about the influx of Irish having a bad effect on Scotland unless it is to do something about tackling the problems which caused the emigration."
The Glasgow Courier, 1830
In The Story of the Making of Buchanan Street by Daniel Frazer, there are several snippets from 1821, e.g.:
NEW BUILDINGS above St George's Church, on the west side, first let by Thomas Burns, wright and builder. Buchanan Street. –– Glasgow Courier, 30th April 1821
So I'm puzzled as to what happened to this newspaper. People seem to quote from it at various times, but I don't see a collection at any library.
Regards,
Sarah

Re: The Glasgow Courier
Hi Sarah
Maybe it was quite a short lived publication and fizzled out before 1840, leaving no copies for the Mitchell Library to store!? My other half (from the west coast) has heard of it.
There is a line about it here, but the article does not say for how long it was around.

There is also this on the NLS site:
This looks like a page from said newspaper...
http://www.gtj.org.uk/en/large/item/GTJ70124//page/2/
...held in Wales?
And another page or item copied from it here from NLS

- not clear if the ref. no. given is for a copy of the newspaper or for something referring to James MacQueen...the way I read it, it looks to refer to the paper? Not sure.James MacQueen(1778-1870) was manager of a sugar plantation in Grenada around 1800. In the 1820s he became editor of the 'Glasgow Courier' [Shelfmark: GIVB.2/22(6)]. This paper favoured West Indian merchant interests and opposed any rights for slaves.

Re: The Glasgow Courier
Yes, it's odd, isn't it? There are pages of it about, apparently, but no sign of a full collection anywhere
Puzzled,

The National Library of Scotland has it. It ran from 1791-1866. The online catalogue lists their holdings.

I'll give 'The Mitchell' a call on Monday Sarah and see if they have it.
