Archival Sound Recordings by George Ewart Evans

Post by ninatoo » Sat Dec 18, 2010 9:30 am

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been posted before...I did try a search. Anyway, I found this today...I haven't found any Scottish people yet, but the stories these people tell of their lives are so interesting! A lot of them seem to have been born in the 1880's and they talk about life in days gone by. I found a man talking about being a wheelwright and carpenter, which is what my great grandfather did, so it was very insightful.

That’s great Nina. There's an interesting mixture of stuff there. It’ll be especially valuable for anyone whose ancestor has been one of those who were interviewed. It’s not easy interviewing old people as they often tend to wander off down another track when you’re trying to keep things in some sort of order.

All the best,
Alan

Thanks Alan,

I felt closer somehow to my great grandfather hearing the man there talk of doing the same job. The man talked about going out and having to cut their own trees down and then come back and fashion the wood for whatever they were making. I hadn't thought the work would be so 'hands-on', so it was a really useful insight!
