1881 Scottish Census Transcriptions FREE on FamilySearch.

Post by Currie » Fri Jan 21, 2011 11:58 am

Great news,

1881 Scottish Census Transcriptions FREE on FamilySearch.
https://www.familysearch.org/s/collecti ... ed-records

The 1881 census transcriptions which have for many years been available for England and Wales, and for free, on the Family Search site, are now available for Scotland. It is listed under England-Wales at the moment, but don’t worry, they’ll probably get their act together.

I prefer the old FamilySearch census site because of the way you can wander up the street, like on FreeCen, and for various other reasons. Unfortunately the Scottish 1881 isn’t on the old site.

The Family Search census transcriptions are usually very much more accurate than those available on Ancestry. Note that the new site is Beta, is still under development, and that functionality may improve.

Make the most of it,
Alan

Thanks for this, Alan.
Although I have the LDS discs this will be handy.
Like you I prefer the old family search site. I find the beta site difficult to navigate and to narrow down searches - or is that just me?

Best wishes,
Meg

Just being nosey i had a look at my gt grandfather. He is there with his mother but his two sisters are missing from this transcript as in they are not all listed together like they are on SP or the discs. They are found seperately so if you are looking for someone in a household you may not find them / him/ her - together.
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Oh I've found that too, Tracey.

My gt grandfather is shown with 4 other members of his household but not the other 2, and you can't access the whole household with all the members of that household!
Perhaps it's a glitch they will iron out?

There is also the assumption that a married couple are the parents of any children in the house. I searched on a particular name - it named his "Parents" but I know that the woman listed was actually his step-mother. This could cause complications for people new to searching and who have not seen any original documents, where it clearly states that the relationship is to the head of the household.
Main lines: McCormick(mack); Connel; Others: McDonald; McFadzean; Brown; Kerr and many more

Was having a great time using this particular census but as far as I can see as of yesterday there is now no 1881 Census for England and Wales (or Scotland) on the site. Has it just disappeared or am I doing something wrong?

Researching Bruce, MacQueen, MacMillan, Nicolson, MacIntosh, MacKinnon, Campbell, Lamont (to name just a few) from Isle of Skye

Hello Maz,

I just had a look and it’s no longer there. Maybe they’re fixing the England-Wales thing.

It could well be the case that some computer whizz kid in Salt Lake City just pressed the relevant buttons so that the whole 1881 census transcripts collection was transferred across to the new site, without realising that LDS have never previously had permission from GROS to add the Scottish element of the 1881 census to FamilySearch.

Maybe such permission has been granted, and the removal is coincidental ........ but, if not, hence the sudden disappearance while someone works out how to access just the E&W part, as they must have done many years ago.

Anyway, isn't Scotland part of England ?

There seem to have been all sorts of records coming/going on the various family search sites recently. The complete Cornwall parish records were online for a month or so - quite wonderful - and then they disappeared - sadly before I had found all those I was checking.

Everything is in flux as they say on the site.Things may come & go for the next wee while as the site becomes fully operational.
As the Church has been involved in genealogical research for over a hundred years & are sticklers for obeying the laws of the land I am sure they will have checked out the legalities of any information they share.
I am busy doing Indexing for Family Search at the moment & I am fairly competent but my work is double checked before being accepted & if there is additional info avaiable I try to find a way to include it even if it doesn't "tick boxes".
My eyes have been opened about many records & how varied the quality & quantity of info avialable. Many birth records early twenty century Texas have no first name for example-a few cases where the Father failed to register one(subsuquent info gives this as a reason for changing original birth certificate) & a few where the Registrar has omitted or misspelt it.
One memorable one had no name at all for eother the child or the Mother! It was around about retiral age this was being rectified.
Many will be up for testing for glitches etc & may return in the near future & others???
