Trade Directory In England ?

Post by trish58 » Thu Jun 30, 2011 12:58 am

Hi folks
Haven't been around for quite a while, but back into the family history again.

I am trying to find if England had trade directorys, I did a Google search but couldn't find anything relevent to my search.

Looking for Harry Chapman "Wool Merchant" died around the 1920's.

Thanks-Trish :D

Hello Trish,

This University of Leicester site has many English and Welsh directories up to the 1910s online. http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

Do you know the county and town where he lived or had his business and the approximate span of years he would have been active there? Browsing the directories may be more useful than keyword searching.

Let us know if you need any help in searching there.

All the best,
Alan

Hi Alan

Thanks for the reply.

All very complicated as I knew nothing about this guy until he appeared as the late husband of a relative of mine.

Death certificate of Annie Elizabeth Chapman nee Daniell. Died 28 Feb 1948 Brightlingsea Colchester. Widow of Harry Chapman Wool Merchant.
There is no marriage certificate from 1900-1921 for this couple, I had the GRO do a search for this, he is supposed to have died around the 1920's (family tales) So I don't know if he died in the same area, or if Annie went to Colchester after his death, but I thought if I could find him in the trades that would be the easiest thing to do... Told you it was complicated, but I really would like to find out about this man.

Thanks-Trish

Hi Trish,

FREE BMD shows a Herbert Chapman and an Ellen Elizabeth Daniels on the same page in 1904 at Chesterfield.

Annette

Thank you for that, will check it out, I have nothing to lose on this one.

This is the story so you may be able to help & why I was hoping that the trade directory would help.

Annie Elizabeth Daniell born 1873 Kettering Northants.

1900 Annie gave birth to twin boys in Rugby Leicestershire. these boys were put up for adoption soon after their birth, the family story is that they were Fathered by the Son of the house where she worked prior to 1900. The family story is that they married soon after the adoption. I have done a FULL search of Annie/Ann/Ann, Daniel/Daniell/Daniels/ etc marriage from 1900 -1920 with no results.

1901 Annie (I am pretty sure) is a Monthly nurse Lamberth.
1911 Annie Bethnal Green Infirmary Ward Sister. Still using Annie E Daniell, maybe hiding her marital status.

Annie was a nurse all of her working life, Recently information has come forward that she lived in Colchester and married Mr Chapman. She died in 1948. I found the death certificate of Annie Elizabeth Chapman and this is our Annie, we have a photo of her house which was "Hill House" This is where she died, and as I said in my other post it states "Widow of Harry Chapman" Wool Merchant". It appears that 1920 ish they where going to Australia and he died.

So you can see why this post is a little complicated and I don't know where else to search.
Any & all help very much appreciated.
