British Library newspapers
Just had an e-mail that the new public site is going live today. Some really useful additions to the Gale site for my research - e.g. Motherwell Times, Falkirk Herald. Subscription is reasonable for what I want - a year unlimited is £79.95, shorter packages have limited credits but are probably fine if you are focused

This seems to have closed the free access site.

You can search for free but the subscription fees are pricey in my opinion, with restricted credits and time limits unless you plump for the annual one.
Nevertheless, I've been on there for a couple of hours now because of the free search feature. Literally hundreds of results and it looks like a small number may be of assistance with regard to my own research. Might have to wait until after Christmas before I can afford to view them though at these prices

Re: British Library newspapers
I think the prices are OK but that may be because my research is more general so a years sub is a no-brainer. If you compare the pricing structure at the Scotsman then it's a bargain:
http://archive.scotsman.com/pricing.cfm
For your average genealogy user then I think the real problem is the time limit. If you were able to buy 500 credits (or even only 100 or 200) for 6.95 with a years expiry then I think it would be useful as you could dip in and out as your research progressed. These time limits mean you have to plan a trip with military precision to get the best out of the deal as it's not worth 6.95 for that one article you may be interested at a particular time
I really support the initiative though as these records should be widened out to those who can't get to Colindale. And I think we should be prepared to pay for the running of such databases, just with more thought for the needs of the casual browser.

Re: British Library newspapers
Would someone mind looking up a reference for me? It's in the Glasgow Herald of 10 Jan 1862, under Shipping Intelligence.
I would like to know what is said concerning the vessel Princess Clothilde.
Thanks.

Thanks, Falkryn.
Obviously not the Princess Clothilde lost off Newfoundland, three months earlier.

Re: British Library newspapers
Hello Hibee,
The Princess Clothilde probably arrived just in time to be part of what produced the headline in The Scotsman, 21 November, 1861:
"THE STORM AT SEA: LOSS OF MORE THAN FIFTY VESSELS”.
Only about a dozen were named but there were probably many more about due to arrive that just didn’t. If yours had disappeared in isolation your chances of finding something would have probably been much better.
All the best,
Alan

The only other mention I could see was on 17th October 1861 when there is a reference, again in the Glasgow Herald, of the British Barque Princess Clothilde in respect of Corn being delivered to Cork

Re: British Library newspapers
Hi all
Would appreciate if someone could do a look up for me too if possible.
It is a death notice for an Amelia White appearing in the Liverpool Echo for 28th July 1884. Hoping someone can help and send me a copy. Been looking for this for years.
many thanks in advance
Drew
