Greyfriars Cemetery

Post by dbolathe1 » Thu Dec 01, 2011 5:48 am

I have found many Baillie's in the cemetery list of Greyfriars Cemetery in Inverness. However, I'm having a hard time finding what parish belongs to this cemetery so that I can research births, deaths and marriages for the Baillie's in whatever parish that might be.

I've also found a few Baillie's in the Lochend Burial Ground and Chapel Yard in Inverness and not able to find the parish that goes with each of them as well. Would anyone be able to shed some light?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,

[TS_welcome]

If Greyfriars is within the town of Inverness, then it will also be in the parish of Inverness.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Dave,
You could try http://www.highlandfamilyhistorysociety.org/ I found them very helpfull when looking for a transcript of a talk that was given about an ancestor that was buried in Chapel Yard which is in the middle of Inverness.

Thank you very much. I have researched within the US for many years and used to the wording and terminology. I am just getting started and very new to the research in Scotland . It's going to be a little bit of an adjustment as far as learning what and where to look for everything as well as the different terminology. But I am very excited and very much looking forward to the adventure. Thanks again for the help,

Dave

Cemeteries - Church yard to Public grounds.

Greetings from New Zealand.

Like you I’ve found the move into researching for family in Scotland very fascinating, and a steep learning curve about the life and times of the period I’m researching. You do not quote the years you are researching which can have quite an effect, when there was administrative restructuring. There are some good parish maps to be found, but the best that I have, for my Greater Glasgow area of research, was photocopied by my local LDS Family History Centre back in the 1980’s. Unfortunately I never kept a note of the publisher and it is not printed upon the photo copied, page copies, that I have.

While I know your question was not about Glasgow, this information explains why community cemeteries were being set up, to take over from the metropolitan church yards.
