Glasgow City Archives cemetery details

Post by Orlaith17 » Sun Jan 29, 2012 11:35 pm

I have death dates of several relatives in and around Glasgow. I also had some in Dundee and was able to obtain cemetery and plot details by e-mail from a very helpful staff member at Dundee City Council archives. I tried to get similar details from Glasgow but have not managed to have a response to any e-mails. I have tried an address online, then one sent to me from the Dundee person who told me this was her Glasgow counterpart, but neither have responded. Does anyone know of a contact in Glasgow where I can send relatives' names and dates of death and receive informtion of their burial place?

Unfortunately Glasgow charge an extremely high fee for any searches requested, however recently they have been replying that they do not have access to the records which are away being digitised.

I assume this is who you have contacted -

les@glasgow.gov.uk

Falkyrn's right in saying they can charge a hefty fee but I have known them to reply (after a lengthy wait) with plot details for free if exact details have been given.

If they are 'modern deaths' have you tried the online newspapers for death notices?

Yes, I have to agree that I have benefited from their assistance in the past which helped smash down a major brick wall for me.

The high fees quoted are I believe only when you are unable to provide accurate details which results in staff having to manually search the books.

Thank you everyone. Yes, that was indeed the address I had used for e-mail, nelmit, and had no response despit writing twice. I don't mind having to pay fees, though Dundee charged me nothing. I do have precise dates and places of the deaths, and would be happy to simply receive the name of the cemetery they are buried in. I've found Glasgow Archives very helpful in other ways. Someone at the Police Museum couldn't do enough to help, hence my being surprised by no response from cemeteries department. I suppose maybe if I just keep trying I may get a response eventually.
