Thomas Leslie and Elizabeth Bremner

Post by frances » Fri Aug 24, 2012 3:59 pm

Have looked in vain to find the marriage record of Thomas Leslie and Elizabeth Bremner. They had twelve children between 1809 and 1835 in Cairney /Cairnie, Aberdeenshire. They were both deceased by 1899 , can't find their death records either.

Any help much appreciated :)

Have you looked for the family in the census records?

I tried searching on Freecen for the youngest child that the IGI throws up - George born 1835

1841 has:
Piece: SCT1841/178 Place: Cairney -Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 4
Civil Parish: Cairney Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 4 Page: 8
Address: Inshtamock
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
LESLIE Thomas M 65 Independent Aberdeenshire
LESLIE Alexander M 20 Aberdeenshire
LESLIE George M 5 Aberdeenshire
LESLIE Jane F 23 Aberdeenshire
By 1851 Alexander is working on a farm in Huntly, and others seem to be scattered around various farms
searching Leslie born Cairney
LESLIE Alexander Servt M M 34 Farm Servant Aberdeenshire - Cairnie Huntly
LESLIE Elizabeth Servt U F 19 Ag Labourer Aberdeenshire - Cairnie Huntly
LESLIE James Head M M 26 Labourer Aberdeenshire - Cairney(Originally: Banffshire - Cairney) Fordyce
LESLIE Jane Servnt U F 12 House Servant Aberdeenshire - Cairney Keith Banff
LESLIE Jane Wife M F 26 Aberdeenshire - Cairney Keith Banff
LESLIE Joseph Head M M 24 Farm Servant Aberdeenshire - Cairney Huntly
LESLIE Thomas Servt M M 42 Farm Labourer Aberdeenshire - Cairnie Huntly
LESLIE William Head M M 22 Ag Labourer Aberdeenshire - Cairney Huntly
So it looks as if mother died pre 1841 and father went between the 2 censuses. Both pre- statutary registration so finding a death ecords will be difficult.
Though maybe you could locate a gravestone? if the parish records don't turn anything up.

Thank you for the reply. Will have a look again at the Death Records between the two census.

Cheers

Hello Frances,

There are no OPR death records for the Parish of Cairney. If they died there, and it seems likely, and pre 1855, the deaths would not have been recorded, at least not on paper.

The documents on this SP page have info on what's available for the various parishes. http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/re ... -oprs.html

All the best,
Alan

There is a church and small graveyard in Cairnie - ?St Martins Kirk.
A look at the ANESFHS MI Index doesn't glean any likely candiates for either of the couple.
