Re: New data on ScotlandsPeople
Thanks Andrew! I've now used my budget for this month.
Mind you, I feel as if I'm being 'gipped'...being typed documents, I can read them too easily! I'm more used to slaving away with 17th/18th century documents these days.
Regards,
Anne H

Re: New data on ScotlandsPeople
Thanks for the info Andrew.
I have been waiting patiently for this update on wills as I have a famous ancestor, David Stevenson and his brother William Stevenson who died in 1904 and 1919 in Edinburgh. Both apparantly being wealthy men. NO WILLS!!!!
Regards
Jean

Re: New data on ScotlandsPeople
Please remember that these listings on SP are only there if the Executor(s) of the Estate needed to get Confirmation of the Deceased's Estate. Confirmation in Scotland is NOT mandatory. Also, Confirmation may only be needed YEARS after a death and I do mean YEARS!! The usual scenario for this is where financial institutions transfer monies into the name of a Spouse say, but the Spouse continues to live in the house owned by themselves and the deceased until their death or until they suddenly want to move and THAT triggers the need for Confirmation to transfer title to the property and in the case of 2 deaths....2 Confirmations! Of course, there are other reasons for not getting Confirmation right away but that scenario is a common one as people always assume that a property owned by joint owners will transfer into the name of the survivor but that is not always the case depending on how the Title Deeds are worded.

I’m not sure I’m game to look. The shock of finding a Scottish ancestor with anything to leave in a Will could be too much for me.

Lol Alan!
Well I had an optimistic moment and had a look, and I actually found two of mine. One was my gg grandfather who left 7/8 of his money to his daughter and only 1/8 to his son. Even though her and her husband had 'put him up' after the death of his wife, seven years before his own death, I thought it was unusual for a daughter to receive more income than a son in those days. So now I am wondering if there was a falling out somehow, since my dad had no idea his beloved grandfather had ever had a sister!
IS that all confusing? Well, I know what I am talking about, that's the main thing! Lol!

Re: New data on ScotlandsPeople
Hello Nina,
Maybe that was a situation where the son had received his share of his father’s wealth, or whatever, during the father’s lifetime. Although you would think they would have made some small comment about it in the Will, if only for the sake of us poor mortals.
I don’t think I knew anything about any of my grandparents having siblings until I was infected by the genealogy bug.
All the best,
Alan
