Many of the common characters can be done from the numeric key pad and the alt key...
Just hold down the alt key and punch in the numeric on the "keypad", little shorter and quicker for me.
° degree sign = ALT+0176
¼ one fourth = ALT+0188
½ one half = ALT+0189
¾ three fourth = ALT+0190
¢ cent sign = ALT+0162
² square = ALT+0178
³ cube = ALT+0179
± plus/minus = ALT+0177
‰ zero percent = ALT+0137 (not sure what this means)
