Post by delmarco » Sun Dec 04, 2005 8:36 pm

Afternoon All:

I'm trying to figure out this maiden name of James McMenemy's mother.
I cannot tell if this is indeed Louth? Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Thanks,
Karen

Try "Smith" !!

The only problem is that there's not a matching marriage entry, but then the marriage could have been irregular ..................

But there is a matching marriage record for James McMENIMYand Ann SMITH.

I could have sworn that I'd used wildcards that would pick up this record, but apparntly not !

Hi Karen, Taking Davids spelling variation one step further and going back to a query in the census thread...

''I am researching my GGg Grandfather William McMenemy, married to Catherine AKA Jane Durrach, I am trying to find out @ when they came to Scotland, on an 1883 Poorhouse records, their son Andrew lists their birthplace as Ireland. I would really appreciate any effort''.

Have you considered the spelling McMenamin?

If so, there is a place in Ireland called Drumman, Parish of Donaghedy,Tyrone, where a Patrick McMenamin and James DURRAGH were neighbours in Griffiths Valuation. Also a James and Robert Campbell in nearby townland of Tirkernaghan. (1859 for this area)

Your family had left by this time , but wonder if the above could be relatives?

This is the nearest matching of both surnames I could find, however I could have missed obscure variations

Sorry for getting sidetracked from original question on this thread.

Ian:

Many thanks for your post, it is an interesting direction to go in, Ive been told by other "cousins" that the family most likely originated in that area.
Being new to this genealogy research, what is Griffiths Valuation?
The years would fit nicely into the research Ive already done. The given names too, would also fit into a naming pattern Ive noticed.
Again thank you for your input, I so appreciate all the advice, and searches that have been given me.

Have a wonderful day!
Karen

Having spent a lot of time on business in Ulster in the last 10 years, I would concur that a broad Ulster accent applied to McMENAMIN could well be heard by an ear unused to that accent as McMEN[E/I]MY.
