hello all
i have extracted og my ggparents in 1835 which i thought was married cert,now what i would like to find out if they had any wittiness to there marriage and how i can find out,thank you for any help given.joyce from holland

If you already have a copy of the marrige fom the OPR then that, I'm afraid, is it... unlikley there would be more anywhere else.

Unfortunately it is quite unusual for an OPR marriage entry to give much detail. Its usually just something along the lines of:

• OPR 502/00 0002, Roseneath, Dumbarton
  17th January 1823 Archibald McNicol residing in the Parish of Bonhill and Margaret McKenzie in this enrolled their names for proclamation to marriage. They being three several times proclaimed in two days and no objections offered were married here by the Rvd. R Story on 27th same month.

I don't think I've ever seen witnesses to a marriage mentioned, but sometimes there are witnesses for a christening.

Have you looked for possible death records in 1855 and later on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ?

the extracted as you said,and i have,nt looked for death records as i know were and when my ggfather died,i forgot the scotish certs are not like the english marriage ones were they have wittness,but the scotish death cert gives more details than the english ones,thank you all for your replys,joyce

Hi Joyce
English Statutory Registration started in 1837. Scottish marriages from Statutory Registration which started in 1855 give more information than English ones - including witnesses, parents names for both bride and groom, addresses, ages etc. Scottish death records from the same date also give more information than those in England such as the names of both parents. Anything in Scotland before 1855 will, if it exists at all, be in the Old Parish Registers, which usually do not give much information other than the bare minimum.

The benefit of a post-1855 death record for your ggfather, as David sugested, if you don't already have a copy of it, would be that both his parents names should be mentioned on it, it should mention where he was when he died and may include a close relative as an informant. I've often uncovered all sorts of interesting detours in my tree as a result of a son-in-law or niece being the death informant. Even sometimes discovered sons and daughters I didn't know about before...

your right it does have all that infomation on the death cert,both his parents were deceased i have tried to find about about them but come up with nothing,he died in 1873 so i dont know how long his parents had been dead,they were james morgan married to catherine morgan ,maiden name murray can anyone help with either marriage or death of andrew bennett morgan parents,thank you .joyce

There are no female death index cross-check matches up to 1873 for the surnames MORGAN and MURRAY, but be aware that, in the period 1856 to 1858 there is only an index entry for the surname reported at registration.
