Working on the OPRs for Rosshire, and still trying to get used to some of the letters, just wondering if there is a link that could help with the place names

thanks

Hi Mary
You can do a search on part of a place name at:
http://www.scotsorigins.com/ jsp
e.g. putting in Kinloch* returned a KINLOCHLUICHART and a "Heights Of Kinlochewe" both in R&C and there is Achilty, CONTIN, Ross & Cromarty.

Don't know if that will be any help? I've found that I usually need to buy a good OS map of the area I'm looking at. I like the OS "Explorer" series. They usually show farms & etc, and you can not only sort out the names but see the places in relation to each other which is helpful.

Which part of ROC is it you are looking at? - I have Explorer map 438, for Dornoch & Tain and can have a look if this an area you are interested in.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi MAry
I am helping to transcribe the OPRs for that area
Ooooh, how exciting. HUGE area though!
Hope you have some research interests there, to make it really interesting for you!
What/who are the transcriptions for (if you don't mind me asking!)? Is it likely we will be able to view your work online at some point?

Best wishes
Lesley

LOL Lesley not as big as some areas. I am doing Contin Vol 2 all the bapts Marriages, (1820 - 1854)and deaths (1825-1854) it is for FreeREG Scotland, same as the free census project thingy. at present there are only me and another 2 people - so it will be a while before it goes online. Have just finished all the baps for 1820 - they have been input into the data base - just now going over it all again, and trying to figure out the place names - not quite used to the writing yet, but getting there. The same place names keep repeating, so it gets easier. We are still looking for volunteers :D

Hi Mary
We are still looking for volunteers
Just signed up recently to transcribe for FreeCen so I'm a bit wary of biting off more than I can chew!

Will be working on part of Dunfermline Parish, Fife, since that is one which I have so often wished there was an index for as I slogged through the films!! I'd really need to see how the census stuff goes first I think before offering to do anything else.

Best wishes
