Is Genes Reunited a purely English site?

Post by Russell » Mon May 22, 2006 9:09 pm

Can I have a public moan?

The latest Genes Re-united newsletter says "Look up your 1901 census.
Find where your relatives were living.

Fat lot of use if your relatives were Scots who had not crossed the great watery divide that seems (from another post) tp separate us from our Southern cousins.
No mention that only the English census can be accessed.
I grind my teeth in frustration every time I come across this type of parochial attitude.
I thought that some of the news reports had innured me to this attitude but when you pay to join a site then are made to feel excluded it catches me where it hurts most Scots....my wallet!!

I would approach the Advertising Standards but they are probably based in London and would not understand what I was talking about ... even if they could understand my foreign accent in the first place

Grrrh

Lets all learn Gaelic and then they will have to give us bi-lingual signs like the Welsh. (We could insult them without them knowing it  )

Rant over
Still don't feel better though :( :(

Jean - You could be known as OJJ for short....

Russell - sorry your post has been hijacked! I quite agree it is irritating, but there are more of them than there are of us and I'm alarmed to find that I've become so used to it that it almost just washes over me now - I don't expect us to be included, so find I'm rarely disappointed. But its really just not good enough!! I'm off to practice with Colin & Cumberland....

Mar sin leibh, an-dràsta (Bye just now)

I've just had the newsletter and felt exactly the same, but there's no point in even raising the issue with them - ye'd be as weel talkin' tae the byre door.

But hey, on the bright side, do we really need to muscle in on these sites when the availability of Scottish info is so superior anyway.

Incidentally if anyone doubts how hard it is to search for English info, I have a few spare credits for an English-only site which I'm happy to donate in the name of research.

I am not registered with Genes Reunited however in their defence I believe they may seem English Orientated because I beleive they bought the rights to manage the English census data.
