Hope someone can help me past the ol brick wall? Have traced my maternal g/father & G/G/Father in the 1871 census of Liverpool as follows: Charles McNiven age 38 Freight Clerk B.Scotland; Margaret McNiven(wife) aged 35 B.Ireland; Charles (son) age 11 b.Scotland;
William age 8 B.Liverpool as were Alexander aged 3 and Jamie(3mths).(The last was actually ch.John)
Alexanders B/Cert gave his full name as Alexander McGregor McNiven.
Ancestry.Co had family name as McFerran but original clearly shows McNiven, this has now been righted.
In the 1851 Census of Perth, 30 South Street I found the following:
Charles McNiven Head Coachman age 64 B Perth, Nuthill
Jhanet McNiven Wife age 64 B.Perth Comrie
Christian McNiven (d) Dressmaker age 27 B.Perth, Crieff
***** McNiven (D) Bonnet Maker age 25 B.Perth, Crieff
Charles McNiven(G/Son) Draper age 18 B.St Enoch's Lanark
Alexander McGreagor Lodger(Draper) age 32 B Auchberg
William McGreagor Lodger (Draper) age 29 B.Auchburg.
I have been unable to find the family in either the 1841 or 1961 census,
was able to trace the marriage of Charles And Janet and the birth records of their children Margaret 1811 Charles(1813) John(1816) Christian(1818)
James(1821) and Barbara(1823)
I cannot find the birth record of Charles(B.(c)1833) nor his marriage to a Margaret Dunn or the birth record of their son Charles(c.1860)
Perhaps I have leapt to false conclusions tying in the Liverpool McNivens
with those in the Perth Census, but I think the naming of the Liverpool side- in particular the Alexander McGregor and William is to much of a co-incidence.
Would greatly appreciate any help
Thank You
Geo

Hi George
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot
Is this the Charles and Janet you mention on the IGI?
1. CHARLES MCNIVEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: NOV 1808 Muthill, Perth, Scotland
Spouse: JANET GOOLD (extract)
2. CHARLES MCNIVEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 01 JAN 1809 Madderty, Perth, Scotland
Spouse: JANET GOULD (extract)
A few questions - Do you know when the Charles McNiven you have in the 1871 census died? Do you have a death cert for him? Where did you find Margaret Dunn's surname? Was it from Alexander McGregor McNiven's birth cert?
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley
Sorry taken so long replying but I contacted William McNivens Descendant for copy of death Crt. It sys that Charles McNevin(some of the cert. etc we have show McNevin - others McNiven) died on the 5th Jone 1880, aged 47 years- no other relevant info on Cert. the name Dunn is given as Maiden name on b/cert.of Alexander and William - as is the name McNiven.
As regards the marriage of his grandparents(?)presumably they are the same couple- IGI often quotes more than 1 date for an event.
I have had another look at the 1841 census- found some of the residents living in the same street in the 51 census- but no sign of the McNivens- nor could I find them in the 61 Census- but will keep on lookn
Many thanks again
Regards
George

Hi George
(In one case I've come across an estimated marriage date was given in the IGI - a submission - for a couple whom I know did not marry - their child was illegitimate and this was explained in no uncertain terms in the Kirk Session minutes!!
)
best wishes
Lesley
This often happens when the bride and groom were from different parishes and a line or two about the banns being called are noted in both parishes. I've also seen it occur on the IGI when a submission has been made by an LDS church member - in some cases they may have estimated a marriage date.As regards the marriage of his grandparents(?)presumably they are the same couple- IGI often quotes more than 1 date for an event.
