Found a decent source for Ireland

Post by emanday » Thu Jul 13, 2006 12:47 pm

Only having date and place of an ancestors marriage in Antrim, I used Google to do a search for Irish genealogy sites and, though they didn't find this on, I was directed to it from another site.

http://www.ancestryireland.com

I now even know the names of the witnesses, minister, occupations and that it was a registry office marriage. I also now know that my ancestor had not yet joined the army at that point as his occupation is shown as "weaver". \:D/ I still don't know the wife's mother's name ](*,) as neither parties' mother's were named, only the fathers.

Searches are free, but it costs £5 to view up to 5 full records from the list of potentials found. My only complaint about the site is that any unused credits cannot be used to view records from a different search.

Hello Emanday
a couple of weeks ago i spoke to a very nice lady
at a history fayre where the Ulster Historiacal Foundation
had a stall about this site and how i felt about the unfairness of unused credits and not being able to access anything with them,
anything else once you had viewed a entry.
I was singing the praises of Scotlands People, and telling how much it cost, and what if you where lucky  ,you could get for your £6.
She said that she would pass on my comments to those in the "know"so to speak,so maybe's if they get enough negative feedback they might do something about it?
kind regards
maggie

Good for you maggie,

I had thought about making a comment about it on the site itself. I shall now :)

Like you say, maybe if enought people did just that; between your personal contact about it and any other similar comments, it might cause a change in their policy.

Watch this space!
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.
