Cumberland St. Conastan?

Post by Pat Bostock » Sun Aug 06, 2006 9:56 am

Hi,

I have a Poor Relief source which has the address of Cumberland Street, Conastan. Is that the correct spelling or have I read Conastan incorrectly?

Also, there are 2 other mentions of where the person's husband died: William Street, M.E. & their son was born in Kirk Street, C.

Do you think that the Kirk St. C. would be Conastan?

Can I also get a suggestion on where William St. M.E. would be.

Any help would be most gratefully received.

Kind regards,
Pat Bostock.

Hello Pat,

What time zone are we talking?

Kirk Street (now Stevenson Street) is in the Calton area of Glasgow and Cumberland Street in the Gorbals.
William Street can be found north of the river. Hopefully someone else will know what M.E. means. I would think M........... East but at the moment I can't think what.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hullo,

The time period for Kirk St. C. was 1896 & the time for William Street, M.E. was 1850.

I hadn't realised that I should look at Glasgow, is that where Conastan is?

Thanks very much for your kind replies.

Regards,
Pat Bostock.

Hello Pat,

Because I know the street names I just assumed Glasgow although I have never heard of Conastan.
You say the info is from a poorhouse application. Was the application made in Glasgow? If so I can check details next time I'm at The Mitchell if you want to give me the details.

Actually I've just looked at William Street again through my link on the above post and noticed there is a Cumberland Street running parallel to William Street. :!:

This means all the streets you asked about can be found in Calton, Glasgow.
Regards,
Annette

Hi Pat
Often after the address the inspector would put something to give the exact location of the dwelling...
For example "11 Clyde street" "up one stair"
or "20 Tobago street" "Connolly" (meaning the applicant was living in the Connolly household).

Jim
researching
McIntyre, Menzies, Cowley, Pearson, Copland, McCammond, Forbes, Edgar etc. in Scotland
Skinner in Northumberland
