Archive quality photo albums - Glasgow or Edinburgh?

Post by LesleyB » Fri Aug 11, 2006 2:30 pm

Hi all
I'm aware it is possible to buy archive quality photo albums online or by post from various companies but does anyone know of anywhere which sells them to the public in Edinburgh or Glasgow (or anywhere else in Scotland for that matter?

- I'd just like to be able to actually see one or two and compare methods of storage etc. before I spend my hard-earned cash!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley
My brother in law is a prof photographer. He reckons if you contact your local photographer (any one with a good rep) he would be able to show you some stuff and prob get them for you. If it was going to be something that there would be a market for, 9 out of 10 would be interested!
Worth a try!

Hi lainey
Thanks for your reply - that is an angle I hadn't considered. Certainly might be worth following up.

Its one of those jobs I just keep putting off, but I really must face up to it and put all these old photographs somewhere safe!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley

I don't know anything about stores in Scotland, but maybe this information will help you.

I have read on some sights that it is best to make sure that your album sleeves are polyester rather than regular plastic. In the USA prices for good albums vary all over the place.

Hi Lesley,

I am a photographer, and suggest you give a company called Calumet a call, they have a branch in Edinburgh. They do a range of albums by Spicer Hallfield that might be of interest. For what it's worth though, I keep all my G Grandfathers old photographs/postcards in traditional albums made by Paperchase, not the slip in or adhesive kind, but the ones with acid free pages with separation sheets between (I think it's called glassine paper). The colours are a bit limited, however if you want something simple like black, they do an assortment of sizes. You have to buy photo corners, which can be a bit fiddly, but then our long-departeds managed it ok!

Hope this helps,

Scott

Just to follow what Scooter was saying, most photographers deal with Spicer Hallfield so your local person should have something to show you, if spicers do the kind of albums you are looking for..........really should be easy to get hold of their albums.

PS Did used to be pricey, dont know what they are like these days!

I've taken a different approach. For the last few months I've spent an eternity scanning all the photographs I can get my hands on. Together with the digital photographs from my camera I'm going to back them all up onto DVD and hand out copies to the family.

Hi Rab

That is a good idea, but you should also have hard copies. I have heard that DVDs and CDs don't last forever.
