Hi folks,
Long time reader, first time poster!
After using up many credits on SP I thought it was about time I booked myself into Park Circus for a day, it being more local to me than NRH.
Obviously I'd like to do as much as I can in the one day so I was wondering if someone can answer a couple of questions relating to accessing the records..
I understand the link to Edinburgh means you can now view images of Censuses and Statuatory records on-screen.. but are you allowed to bring in a disk or a USB drive, save images that you view and take them home with you?
If I have to sit and transcribe by hand, then no problem but if I can just glance at something long enough to confirm it's "one of mine" and move on I'd rather do that, get more deone and take it all home to digest later!
Failing being allowed to save images, can you print them, and if so how do you pay for those prints? Is it advisable to turn up with a pocketful of change?!
Finally, do they have internet access from the same machine? When I'm working at home I'm usually flicking between various web-based sources all the time so it'd be interesting to know in advance if you can call up the net for a bit of cross-checking with the IGI etc!
Thanks,
Paul
Visiting Park Circus..what are you allowed to do?

When you arrive you are allocated a machine which has a direct link to the indexes in Edinburgh. You view the entries on screen and if you want a photocopy it costs 50p a go. You pay when you get your copies.
Photocopies only apply to older records ie same time scale as SP.
If you want more modern records you have to order an extract at a cost of around £7. You can also transcribe of course (most people do). You can take a laptop if you would prefer to type the info but you have to use battery power - you cannot plug it in.
Sorry no internet access and because it's just images you are viewing you cannot download info to USB drive.
I think I've got everything right I'm sure someone will let us know if I haven't.
The registrars are very helpful and will give you a run through if it's your first time.
Be organised about what you are looking for (says she who gets sidetracked constantly). The biggest hurdle at first is that you have to search by year but you soon get used to it.
You will have a great time - enjoy!!
Kind regards,
Annette M

Hi Paul
I was going to offer exactly same advice as Annette.
You will be surprised how quickly the time passes and you wouldn't want to waste any time on IGI (you can do that when you get home).
Annette, I also go well prepared and usually get sidetracked too

Re Park Circus
Hi Paul,
Annette's really said it all - including getting sidetracked...! Me too Russell.
Only thing i could add is that unlike SP you can't use *wildcards*.
Names are exactly as GROS has them in their indexes.
Nor search the Statutory Records by area.
You get everyone in Scotland for the name that you've searched for....
But beside the name it does give the Registration District.
I sometimes use *wildcards* on SP to search for "difficult" names - ie those with many variations.
Then print out the list and study them for possibles when visiting Park Circus.
Mind and book a place - it can be quite busy at times; there are only 12 seats.
And one visit is never enough....
